Magazine Collage Ideas For Kids
Your First Magazine Collage Project for Kids When I introduced my kids to magazine collage, they instinctively cut out their favorite pictures.
They usually carve animals, people or figures. Their collages are interpreted very literally; For them, collage means cutting out what you like and pasting selected images next to each other without overlapping.
In my experience, my kids didn’t like layering, overlapping, or changing found photos. An example of this type of collage is shown below.
Over time, our collages became more creative and included additional materials and techniques.

I think this project was the most successful because I modeled how to make a collage with my kids at the same time and how to overlap and combine elements in a more unexpected way than they expected. With a few suggestions and encouragement, my son’s imagination soared to his first collage at age 7. I love how she wore sunglasses on the moon and had a blue face! She added magazine clippings, faces of our family (printed from my desktop printer), and hand-drawn elements with a Sharpie. A few of his favorites also made it: snakes and apples!
He especially likes to paint his body and hands for his people. Plus, a few of his favorite things – apples and snakes – are included in the artwork!

In this mixed media collage, the bird’s eggs are cut from magazines and the twigs and branches of the nest are cut from brown paper. The background is made using the dry brush watercolor technique.
Be creative! Think about how you want your bird’s nest to look, then arrange the trees and branches in a way that reflects that view. For example, sticks may or may not overlap with eggs. We did both!
Design your favorite birds with simple shapes cut from colorful magazine pages or pages full of printed text. The contrast between the big, bold style and the small black words is amazing!
My son loves cardinals, especially the contrast of bright red cardinal feathers against snowy white. For this kid’s collage project, we found an image on the internet that inspired him. This is what we call “visual inspiration”. We then printed the image and used it as the background for her collage.

Then we looked for magazines and tore out the pages with shades of red, black and orange. My son decided to use magazine text with a white paper background as snow, which turned out great! Finally, he started plucking and gluing shapes from the red shade to make the bird’s feathers.
As a final step, we scratched small white dots to add dimension to the snow falling on top of the snow.
In this collage, we cut out geometric shapes to make a simple racing car, then painted those shapes over textures and images we liked in the magazine. The result is a collage of cars racing through magazine clippings. (Do you like racing cars, we sell LEGO racing car stickers!)
For the background of this collage we used a colorful full page magazine ad as well as a design we drew as process art the other day.

Cut out shapes to make a racing car, but this background design is an abstract drawing by a six-year-old. The design reminded me of a bicycle, so we added a racing car. Learn more about encouraging process art in our other kids’ art posts.
Being out of school gives us more time to be creative and make art at home. On Thanksgiving, we sat down and made a collage turkey out of paper cutouts. For this design, we added one of our favorite craft materials: googly eyes (we have lots of googly eyes art ideas)!
Models and models cut out of magazines are excellent material for making faces. In this face collage, a knitted pattern was used for the eyebrows and mouth, and a circular pattern was cut to replace the eyes. The term was coined by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, two figures of the Cubist movement, in the early 20th century. Since then, collage art has challenged traditional artistic representations and allowed artists to break free from the constraints of realism. The Art Of Creative Collage, Hand Decorating Your Own Paper
Collage is a unique art form that incorporates overlapping materials such as paper, photographs, and other mixed media elements. The process involves molding carefully selected materials into the desired shape, then placing and gluing them onto the selected surface.
Art forms such as painting and sculpture take more time to master because they rely on high technical skills. But the art of making a collage lies in pasting, arranging and selecting.
One of the interesting aspects of collage is its accessibility. While some artists may have formal training, collage art welcomes those with limited artistic experience and resources. The ability to use found materials and everyday objects makes the art form accessible to enthusiasts and enthusiasts alike.
Because of this, collage has found its way into mixed media, street art, fashion, and even social media. It thrives on the contemporary art scene and artists continue to push the boundaries.
