You don’t need any special skills or talent for drawing and sketching to get started, you just need a little practice and a desire to learn. My approach to learning to draw is that even if you have no idea how to do it, you can get really decent after a while if you learn the basic techniques of the concept and practice regularly. So let’s look at these steps.

It’s always a good idea to warm up a bit and get comfortable with your tools, and warming up is also a great way to loosen up your hamstrings and get your mind on the page. By playing with different marking techniques, you’ll see what you can do with your pen.

So grab a pen or pencil and make different marks. Linework can be incredibly varied. Scribble, circle, dot, dots, hatches, zigzags – explore the range of your drawing tool. Also try changing the pressure. Having fun with it – it’s important to keep your exercise fun and playful, otherwise you’ll stop.
To take this research a step further, let’s do hand-eye coordination training. Take a pencil and practice drawing some straight and curved lines, long and short. Don’t worry about doing it right or wrong, it’s just a warm up.
Then draw some round shapes like circles and ellipses and try loose shapes like lying figure eights. Change the size and also change the pen pressure. See what changes when you draw with your whole arm, that means you lock the elbow and wrist and make movements from the shoulder joint. What will give you the smoothest strains?
Fill the page with these surveys. Make it fun and playful. If you are bored, there is no need to continue. But try to notice how your hand feels now, is it more comfortable with the pen?

I find it helpful to just do a few of these warm-ups at the start of a drawing session, it helps me create smoother linework. And for sketching beginners, it can be helpful to loosen up and learn pencil control.
After our warm-up, let’s start drawing properly. Let’s see what is the basis of all drawing skills. Basically, anything you want to draw, you can break down into basic shapes. The basic shapes are circles (we’ve already practiced them), rectangles and triangles. If you can draw these basic shapes, and I’m pretty sure you can, you can basically draw anything.
So how does it work? When looking at an object in real life, all you have to do is figure out how to visually break it down into more manageable basic forms and write it down on paper. So you can look at a rose, a house or a bird and figure out how to reduce them to basic shapes. It is much easier to draw a circle with a line attached and make it precise than trying to understand a complex flower in a fraction of a second.
So you can use those basic shapes as a loose signature. For this we start with very light lines and rough shapes, which we can refine into a more specific structure and more defined shapes in the second step. But right now it’s all about getting the proportions right and creating a solid signature to work with. you don’t need to focus on perfect lines or shadows or details at this point, all that can come later.

These gesture drawings are often very loose and spontaneous, ideal for warming up and getting the essence down on paper.
As a second step, you’ll want to refine what you’ve drawn through a solid outline. Again, observing what you are drawing is far more important than actually placing the line. Drawing is as much about observing and learning to see as it is about placing lines.
Take your gesture drawing as a base and check all the angles and sides against the subject. See where you need to make adjustments. Observe the angles, shapes and curves of your subject. Travel along the contour, keeping in mind the proportions you’ve already explored. Are they true to what you drew? If not, make your corrections now.
Again, pay close attention before placing your lines. Really pay attention to what your subject looks like before you line up. Draw what you see, not what you think you see.

You can use your pencil to help you measure. If you match the angle with your pencil, it’s much easier to translate it to paper.
Often in the first phase of the survey you will draw several loose lines, now it is time to decide on one contour line and define it with a solid line. Try to stay true to what you see in front of you.
Before we finish drawing, let’s back up for a moment. You now have a loose bottom drawing with basic shapes refined with a tighter outline and some defined corners and edges. It’s not bad.
At this point it can be helpful to make lots of quick drawings to practice what you’ve learned.

You want it to become a fluid process. It will take some time, but it is important to develop hand-eye coordination. You will want to make many quick drawings at this point rather than one perfect drawing. How do you best practice it? I find that shorter sessions over several days will give better results than one longer session once a week.
These basics may seem very simple and mundane, but they are very important in learning how to draw. Over time, these techniques will become second nature to you and you won’t even think much about them.
At this point, you’ll want to make your sketch a little more rounded, a little more finished. Do not continue with this step when your basic frame and proportions are not in place, instead create another drawing or correct the one you have. It’s good to just start over.

In this step, you can add contrast, light and dark areas, and some detail, such as textures in a few places.
These are all techniques that can be practiced, however I would caution against overdoing the details. You just want some places with more detail and texture, that’s where you lead the viewer around.
Go back to the mark making exercise and remember the different marks and lines your pencil can produce. Dots, lines, hatches, broken lines, different lines. Try to think about what kind of texture will best suit your subject and add some detail – sparingly, not completely.
When it comes to contrast and shadows, the same concept applies. Add darker areas to show volume here and there, don’t overload the sketch. I know it’s a lot of fun and hard to stop, but you just need a few accents in the drawing. To add loose shadows, you can squint a little to see the values more easily.

That’s it, just a few simple steps. The key to becoming good at drawing is to practice these skills a lot over time. You need to get into your pencils until this process becomes second nature. So practice a lot and start building your habit by putting a note somewhere so you don’t forget it.
Let me add a quick note about errors. Mistakes will happen, it’s part of the process. Don’t get too attached to mistakes, they will help you learn and improve your next drawing. I understand that we all want it to come easy, but the hand takes time to understand these concepts. You’ll need to build muscle memory, and that means working on mistakes. So try not to get frustrated with mistakes and trust the process. This is what learning to draw looked like for Leonardo, and this is what it looks like for the rest of us. So expect and try to accept your mistakes, they’re really not a big deal and will help you on your way to becoming a better sketcher.
