Cute Plate Design Ideas – Spring is here! Arizona summer is here! But now is that magical time when the weather is not too hot and not too cold, and it’s okay to eat outside. Since the desert is blooming with bright colors around us, why not add color to our food!
This food was still a gift to me! My mom likes bright colors so I painted a set of 4 plates for her birthday. Christmas followed with matching mugs, then Mother’s Day with matching mugs, I even threw in Father’s Day. As shown below – I painted them a long time ago! But they have lasted for years and guests always ask my mom where she gets her special dishes from!

What I love most about these dishes is the simplicity! I’M NOT A FRIEND – yet I’ve managed to make beautiful dishes with just stripes and spots and the right color combinations.

The trick is to stick to the same colors on the outside. I had my 4 colors and painted all the salad plates with a solid border (only 3 solid coats of paint, letting it dry between coats) and matched the spots puffy whites – what could be easier! I continued to use white puffy paint as a decoration throughout the project.
The rest is up to you. Play around with different types of dots and lines. Keep it simple and basic and you’ll have the most delicious food ingredients ever! 🙂

Well, I thought it might be a good idea to keep some ring bowls around the house and what’s the easiest and cheapest way to make a ring bowl? From clay, of course!
Here’s a quick video tutorial on how to make your own marble clay earrings, or keep scrolling for the article and photo tutorial:
Decorate Plates With One Of These Unique Ideas
1. Roll a snake (about 5″ long) out of each color of clay you want to use. I usually make two larger rolls of white, a yellow roll in the middle, a smaller roll of whatever color I’m using, and then a smaller black roll.
Ideally, you want enough clay to roll out a 6-inch circle, but don’t worry about getting the right amount of one color or another. Even if you use the same recipe every time, each dish will look different.
3. Make a big loop in the snake (about twice the original length) to mix the colors. After every few strokes, turn the ends to the opposite side to give a more colorful cane look.
Once it is double in length, fold the snake in half and twist the two ends together as shown above. Repeat the folding, folding, twisting and folding process 2-3 times.

4. Roll all the clay into a ball. You want to see most of your colors on the ball, so pull it in half, and if you don’t, smooth it out again.
5. Use a silicone roller or a glass container to roll out the marble ball. I like to use a glass jar to see what happens when I wear certain colors hard or soft.
The colors should blend together to form a marble pattern as you fold them. Try going around in different directions, from the edge, from the middle, etc. to push the clay from different sides. Roll to 1/4″ thickness.
6. Using the 6″ diameter round object as a template, cut out the circle of the bowl using an X-Acto or clay knife.

7. Carefully place the circle in an oven safe dish or frame that is slightly smaller than your circle so that it dips slightly in the center and gives you the shape of the dish.
Bake the dish according to the temperature of the clay pot (mine was 15 minutes at 275°F). Remove the bowl from the oven and let the clay cool, then turn the larger bowl on the floor and tap gently until the clay bowl falls.
8. When the clay has completely cooled, use a small brush to paint the rim of the bowl and let the paint dry. Cover bowl with frosting if desired.
Glass won’t make food safe or completely waterproof, but it will give you a shiny finish if you can get into it!

Since you are working with baking clay in the oven, the bowl will still be small after it cools and will feel more like hard rubber than porcelain, but it is! He still needs to maintain his perfect form and handle the rings like a champion.
Although the color combinations are endless, my favorites are made of white, blue, black and two bright colors that together make a total of three colors.
I recommend using a baking clay like Sculpey which is easy to start with. It will save you a lot of time and finger strength.
If you’re not feeling like the DIY type, you can still grab a handmade plate, but these bowls turned out better than I hoped!
