Christmas Background Design Ideas – For the past few years I have been responsible for assembling 3 Christmas photo booth backdrops at our church for family photo shoots. They have always been pretty much the same design, just placed in different areas to reduce crowding. But this year I had a team to help and we came up with three different beautiful and festive designs! I shared some on Instagram while I was working on them and a lot of people wanted to see the finished products, so I thought I’d put them all in one place and share them here with you so you can see them. Can pin for future reference. you want. I even stuck pictures of some of my new favorite winter fashion pieces at the end of the article to share with you. My goal with these designs is always to be budget friendly but make a big impact!
I’ll show you a drawn image showing the entire background and surrounding area, but I’ll also show you a cropped version of the image to give you an idea of what it would ideally look like. If possible, I really like to frame these shots with people out of the background. I don’t like showing a neighborhood if it can be avoided. This means I try to keep these spots as large as possible, but also bearing in mind that sometimes the family groups using the space are so large that the background is completely in front of them. Cannot be covered. Well, it was getting down to the details in my head, but this is what I had in mind when working on them!
Christmas Background Design Ideas
We started with the Christmas graphic used in all our seasonal releases this year and adapted it a bit from the initial design. One of the women on the team is a graphic designer and super handy, so she scaled the design to fit the wall, then the team cut out different leaves and flower petals. One day we met to collect all the pieces of the wall.

And I couldn’t be happier with the result! We started by using poster command strips to secure large sheets of colored butcher paper to the wall, then used a hot glue gun to adhere all the pieces to the black paper. We painted some details like fruit stems and accents, then my friend wrote a “Merry Christmas” banner on the ribbon to finish it off.
Our second photo booth has a completely different feel. Another friend on the team suggested using these simple paper snowflakes made from brown paper lunch sacks (there are tons of tutorials on Pinterest) and having a craft day with the ladies in my family to make a batch. hosted which we also used. They turned out so cute!
Our foundation was a section of white piping and drapes (we don’t have a solid wall here or it would be nice to use butcher paper). I used 2 sets of curtain lights in the background. I cast them behind the crossbar and then secured them with binder clips like this one.
I used large bobby pins to attach the paper snowflakes to the curtain, then we framed the edges with old Christmas trees that some of the members no longer wanted and swag to wrap around the bases. White plain sheets were used. So, the cost of the space was not much more than the lights we would need to use for years to come.

Our design team printed a Merry Christmas banner for me and I cut it out on a piece of green butcher paper and added some color, then mounted the whole sign to a piece of foam board for stability. I used packing tape to attach long white curly ribbon or string to the back, then attached it to the top with more binder clips on the back to hang the sign.
We also added a ring light tripod for each photo booth booth. I got the idea from a concert we went to last year. They set up a photo booth and put a tripod there so everyone could take their own photos if no one was around to take photos for them. Colored lighting also helps a bit in halls where lighting can be less than ideal.
Finally, this year we created a special space for kids, which we haven’t done in the past! Why didn’t we think of this before? And actually, I think I’ve seen more photos posted of adults using this space than kids… ha! To do this, we split red, green, and white butcher paper in half vertically to make long strips and hang them in alternating colors.
Our plan was to cut foam boards that the kids could hold as “frames” around their faces. I used a few different wrapping paper designs mounted on sheets of spray adhesive foam, then cut out the middle to make the frame.

On a whim I thought it would be fun to add a balloon garland to add to the fun factor, but this was an experiment since it would be going on all month and I wasn’t sure how long the balloons would last. It’s so quick and easy and cheap to put together, so I plan on making it again as needed throughout the month. We finished it in 2 weeks and the balloons were still hanging there, but I went ahead and made a new one to get us through the rest of the month. I used some extra balloons individually taped to the sides of the balloon wreath.
I used clear wrapping tape to secure the line where the balloons lined up on the background paper at a few points, but then used loops of clear tape on various balloons throughout the garland to hold them in place on the paper. can be kept I also didn’t want too many loose hanging pieces on the garland because you know kids…balloons…I wanted to avoid too much batting around any loose balloons! 😂
We have three Christmas photo booths for this year. After all our hard work, it was so much fun to walk around and watch our friends and family gather to use them! Also check out some photos after I recently picked up some new, stylish and affordable winter wardrobe accessories from WalmartFashion. Our fun Christmas backgrounds made them the perfect backdrop to share with you!
This red and black buffalo check duster jacket is a versatile piece from early fall through winter. It’s easy to dress it up or down depending on what you’re wearing. In the photo at the top of this post I wore boyfriend jeans and a white t-shirt for a casual look, but here I wore it to church last Sunday with a white button down blouse, black pants and sneakers. was Runs big, I cut it down and still had plenty of room.

Somehow I have never owned a camel colored coat. This is what I consider a winter wardrobe staple! This funnel collar coat is warm without being heavy, perfect for church and errands. I wear it with a super soft, lightweight sweater. It actually caught my eye when my sweet niece wore it to our family’s Thanksgiving dinner last year. I complimented him and asked him about it and was surprised when he said he got it from Walmart! I bought one when I saw it back in stock this year.
I asked my daughter to put the children’s backdrop in front of me so I could share the plaid “backdrop”. She bought it herself a few weeks ago (yay for affordable pieces for teenagers!) and she loves it!
Here are some really beautiful winter styles; I ordered a few more pieces while I was collecting my picks to share with you! There are tons of incredible deals that are already discounted or on sale, and many can even make it to Christmas if you order today! You can click on each item image for more details.
