We all know how to draw a “normal” heart shape. To give it a little extra character, one option is to stretch it vertically so it’s tall and thin. Just start as usual, but keep the curve tight and extend the sideline more than usual. Repeat on the other side. Then fill your heart with color and maybe a pattern, like these polka dots!
The opposite of the Tall and Thin heart, this style stretches your illustration horizontally. To draw, just make your curve to the side a little extra, then quickly bring the bottom line. You will get a short and sweet heart that looks really nice when you draw it.
One of my favorite things to do when drawing a heart is to purposely make one side higher than the other. It requires pressure because you don’t have to worry about the side of the heart being symmetrical. And add a playful, quirky feel at the same time! Again, color and add any pattern or highlight you want.
Since Valentine’s Day is often about celebrating two people in a relationship, why not literally put two hearts together in a drawing? Start with the back heart, then draw a slightly smaller one that overlaps on one side. I like to use a different color for each heart to make the image pop and show the two different shapes.
Family Day: A Love Supreme Valentine
These cute little hearts are really easy to draw. Start with a basic heart shape, then go around the edges and continuously draw a series of small bumps. You can color it or leave it white. I love this feminine feel, and it reminds me of making Valentine cards with paper doilies when I was little!
One of the most common associations with Valentine’s Day is the idea of being shot through the heart with Cupid’s arrow. To draw this, start with a heart shape, then sketch an arrow through it. I put mine on the diagonal, but you can do it however you like. Remove the middle part of the arrow and draw a short curved line at each end of the remaining part. This will make it look like an arrow that goes through the heart.
This basic heart shape is surrounded by a series of lines radiating from it. I alternate between shorter and longer lines, but you can also keep them all the same length.
To draw this elegant heart, you start with a spiral on the left side. When you bring the pen down, make a small loop, then up to form the right side of the heart. You can do it like I did, or add a second spiral on the right side.

Drawing envelopes is all about basic shapes. Start with a rectangle, then draw a triangle at the top. Draw a second triangle on the bottom half that overlaps the first. Fold the top of the second triangle so that the top flap overlaps the bottom of the cover. Add a heart shape or lips to cover it with love!
To draw an open envelope, you start with a rectangle, then place a triangle shape on top. This will be like a simple house. Draw the heart shape from the cover and remove the part inside. Color your heart and add other small hearts around it. Write “love” or someone’s name on the envelope to complete it.
That’s all! Now you have 10 Valentine’s Day doodles that you can use to make cards and love notes for that special someone.
