32 Easy, Unexpected Living Room Decorating Ideas

I recently decorated a spring vignette, which I will share soon, and wanted to include butterflies. Because butterflies often remind us of spring, don’t they?

When I made the butterflies, I wanted them to look like they were flapping their wings when they sat, so I decided to make more 3D paper butterflies. I really like how they turned out and the best part is that they are completely customizable!

I choose purple cardstock colors to tie my butterflies to the season. However, you can make butterflies out of any cardboard in any color! They can really be designed to match any decor scheme. If you’re not a fan of color, use a neutral color card. 🙂

I can imagine all kinds of uses for these butterflies! They can be used as wall art by placing them in a flying pattern on the wall or stuck to canvas for beautiful works of art. Another use is to put them in a vignette like mine! I think they would make beautiful bouquets! Add them to simple vine bouquets decorated with Spanish moss and other greenery.

Don’t want to read all the instructions? I have added a video to this post showing you how to make your own butterfly ornaments. If you don’t see the video, turn off your ad. For detailed instructions, keep reading.

I have included this free pattern of four different butterflies. Each butterfly comes in three sizes so you can use whichever size works best for what you’re doing. Print the butterflies on a piece of cardboard. Then, using sharp scissors, cut out the butterfly templates.

Using the butterfly pattern of your choice, draw it on colored paper or cardboard. To speed up the process, you can fold the paper in half so you can cut out two butterflies at once! 🙂

Here are some suggestions for you. Leave the butterfly at the folded edge, this will hold the two butterflies together until the end. Also, when you find yourself cutting into a sharp corner, cut into the corner and then come at it from other directions. This allows for sharp corners. 😉 After cutting out the first set of butterflies, I noticed that I could see the tip of the pen, so I started tracing the image on the back of the cardboard box.

By folding the card in half, you get two exact copies of the same butterfly! The only reason you wouldn’t want to do this is if you want to target a specific area of the pattern on your butterfly. Then you had to track it down to that exact spot. Since I used more marbled paper, it didn’t really matter. Plus, you can choose any type of butterfly you like for the top layer! 😉

I used 2-3 coats for each butterfly. Sometimes if I used two different colored butterflies, I used a cream butterfly in between. I also used two script butterflies with color in between. They turned out great too! Whatever you use, make sure they are of the same butterfly pattern.

To make the butterfly’s horns, I cut two small strands of hemp of the same size. They range in size from 3/4 inch to 1.5 inch.

To achieve a 3D look, you fold the butterfly’s wings. This is easy to do by marking a line where the wing meets the body of the butterfly. I just used my fingernail, but you could also use something dull like a butter knife. Fold the wing towards you and release. Do the same for the other wing. Then a butterfly will appear as if raising its wings. Repeat this step with all three layers of butterflies.

The first step to collecting a butterfly is to attach the antennae to the lower part. Place them so that the antennae are bent apart. Attach the next piece of glue to each additional piece by applying hot glue to just the body part of the butterfly. Try to place the butterflies directly on the previous layer.

Fold the wings slightly forward on each side. Now you have a butterfly flapping its wings. 🙂

Another optional step is to color the body of the butterfly with a black Sharpie marker. I prefer not to do this for most butterflies, but I have for a few small ones.
