Small Studio Type Apartment Design – Need design tips for a studio type condo unit because you don’t know how to decorate or design your space to feel like home?

A few weeks ago, I put on makeup (which I don’t usually do) and went on camera to ask what design problems you have at home. I was wondering if there was anything I could research or write about that would be helpful to you.

One of the responses I received was from OFWs based in Singapore. The problem with his design was that he didn’t know how to improve his rental property without undergoing permanent or – to borrow a doctor’s term – “invasive procedures” that any landlord might not approve of.

I know this problem well. Back when I was single, I used to walk around rental houses and I felt like I was itching to stay home. It was not enough to have a bed, a bathroom, a kitchen for cooking and eating.

Even worse when the unit I rented had furniture that didn’t suit my style or lifestyle. I still have nightmares about that glass-topped, metal-wrapped dining table we once had (with matching chairs), and those hideous big lamps with gold-stained bases and green metal shades.

So I went to my friend’s studio unit to maybe show some simple, no-reno ideas and techniques you can use in your studio—any condo unit or room type for that matter!

My friend was lucky enough to snag an empty studio, which meant she was able to bring her own furniture and decor.

My friend’s furniture was too far back from the wall and the bed didn’t feel like it was part of the overall space. So I first rearranged everything to create sleeping and work areas, but at the same time I made the sleeping area still feel like an interior of a studio unit.

Look at your walls and flooring. Look at your existing furniture. Can’t get them out (landlord refuses to send them into storage)? Work with them by looking at their color and style.

As you can see in the photo above, my friend already has heavy furniture—and it’s all in deep woods.

Wood beige walls (a common feature in many condos) are easy to look at, but not pleasing to the senses.

Living things like plants add life (duh) to any space. Now surprisingly, there are many online plant and garden vendors, such as those on Instagram. It’s easy for anyone to choose a plant they like and care for – even those with very dark thumbs (like me).

), then cutting from one’s garden. Philodendron salome works very well as a cutting and usually lasts at least a week in a vase filled with water.

Blue became our accent, while white, cream and beige became our perfect neutrals. To bring out some of these colors, I looked through my friend’s book collection and found books with blue and white spines.

I also added a soft, fluffy fleece blanket to the bed. It looks more like a bed sheet than a deep-colored duvet, so it brings the color up and makes the repetition more intentional.

Because we already had a lot of wood in the studio, I wanted to simplify things with some shiny, metallic materials.

Metals reflect light for a reflective effect. Not to mention it always adds visual interest.

Mixing metal tones is okay, as long as their undertones are similar. In this space, we have a brushed nickel work lamp, which I paired with a decorative bird in cream gold.

Next, the bed. To make things more fun, I just added a throw pillow with a graphic b&w chevron pattern.

This also applies to bedsheets with circular dotted patterns, as the scale of the pattern varies in size (the dotted circles of the sheet are larger, while the chevron print of the throw pillow is smaller).

If you have something on your site that regularly solicits comments from visitors, show it off! It’s even better if it’s a functional piece, like my friend’s vintage electric fan in aqua.

It was a good addition to the space because of the lack of show, it echoes the blue color we wanted to highlight, and in a very bright shade.

This antique electric fan was bought by my friend from an antique pop shop for P5, 000. Check out the shops at Cubao X in Araneta Center, Quezon City for similar items.
