And I can even bet you have all the supplies for this project at home already 😉

How To Design A Book Cover That Sells

You can follow my lead and create this origami hummingbird bird or you can choose any shape you like, maybe an origami crane?

And you really don’t have to worry about the thickness of the book cover, because mine is quite thick and with the simple help of a pin, you can easily make a small hole in the cover.

– Prepare your book. Place the origami bird and place a piece of cardboard between the cover and the first page to protect the page.

– Download and print templates for free. Or copy the image to a piece of paper in the desired size.

* You can use a piece of painter’s tape to hold the template in place for the next step

– Use your pole to make a hole in the lid. Repeat making holes following the dots on the template until you are done.

– Remove the template from the cover. Check if you missed any holes and test if the holes are big enough for your needle to go through.

– Start knitting by tying a knot in the thread and connecting the holes. Keep the template close by for reference.

* optional: You can glue the first page of the book to the cover, to hide the messy embroidery on the inside.

Using scissors, cut out all the shapes – two ears, a horn, some leaves and some flowers.

I am simply free to give up my form. But if you want a template that shows all the necessary shapes, leave a comment below and I can make it happen.

When you have the shapes cut out, start laying them out on the front book – to make sure the colors work together and that the size of everything is proportional.

Add more dimension by layering colors – as for the leaves, I added a whimsical layer of blue under the green to add more drama.

Also, keep it simple. As for the flowers, I didn’t go into too much detail, instead I just put in three odd circular shapes. READ ALSO: How to make a video with felt flowers

I covered the entire book with felt sheets in this beautiful shade of aqua. If you don’t have a sheet of felt large enough to cover the entire book, you can use good quality wrapping paper.

I felt enough to cover the book, but the folds were pretty tight, so I had to use some binder clips to hold the felt in place for a few minutes while the glue set.

Once the book is covered and all the shapes are cut out, it’s time to assemble our Unicorn Book! First glue the ears and horns. Then drag the gold details over the horns to add some dimension and shine! You can also add glitter glue here.

Add flowers and leaves in place, layering everything lightly. Draw the eye with black fabric paint.

Painting books is a great way to give a second life to old books you have on the shelf, and can even make decorating superstars! It also gives you and your kids a way to express your creativity in a journal or notebook that you look at every day.

You could also use a nice book with a thick cardboard cover, but unfortunately a paper cover curls and warps when wet with ink, doesn’t stay flat even when dry. Hardcover books will last with added ink and dry nice and flat with a clean look.

So grab your extra hardcover books that are headed to the thrift store, here’s an easy way to give them a second life!

For this project, I would recommend using acrylic craft paints. This is the specific type of paint I use!

If you are new to acrylic paints, don’t worry, they are easy to use. In fact, they are a versatile medium for craft projects.

Once you have them in your craft closet, I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun with them in all kinds of arts and crafts!

Water-based wall paint can also be used for general colors if you want it to match your room.

I think it would be fun to try a chalk paint as well, but I haven’t tried that yet, so you’d have to experiment if you did!

If you are using this book for home decoration, you may want to use solid colors and not paint any designs in the book. It is popular to paint the book white or ivory as the main color scheme.

This white painted book can be used as a nice touch in the stack to place a plant or other abilities. Either they can be used alone or in a series of straight books.

It would look nice to paint each book one color, say blue, but add a little more white paint to the blue paint each time you paint the cover of another book. Each book cover is then a lighter shade of the same color, giving it an ombre look.

But if kids want to express that personality, book covers are like a blank canvas waiting for a personal touch!

Diy: Paper Covered Books

Once you have chosen the main color and type of ink you want to use, you need to start with your first book.

Paint the front and back cover with white acrylic paint (or a different background color of your choice) to provide a base coat for the design paint. You may need to lift the book up a bit to paint some of the “pits and cracks” of the spine and cover edges.

Continue painting around the spine of the book, using as much paint as necessary to get a good solid application over the entire cover. I stopped my painting along the side of the book where the front wraps around to see the inside cover.

Let the base coat dry completely, it shouldn’t take long. Apply a second coat if necessary to cover the colored book cover or decoration underneath.

Depending on the book, sometimes it looks nice if a little bit of the book cover color shows through!

So… if you and the kids want more fun, it’s time to break out some extra colors and get creative! This is the best part.

Now that the base color is finished and dry, it’s time to paint the design on the book. As I said, this is a new blank canvas, ready for some self-expression.

To begin with, you may want to place some textures on your background, before adding more complex patterns.

One idea is to paint or clear the background color of another choice. If you want one
