Ballroom Dress Design Ideas – Many seniors around the world are turning to ballroom dancing these days. People are inspired by shows like Dancing with the Stars with celebrities dancing in beautiful costumes, doing the foxtrot, cha-cha, salsa, tango and other dances.

As a ball gown designer, I am fascinated by the senior dancers. I have several clients who are in their eighties actively participating in ballroom competitions, traveling the country, taking private dance lessons from world champions, winning awards and changing their dresses every six months. I admire their drive and enthusiasm and I’m always flattered when they come back to me for another pageant dress.

When talking to my clients, they often complain that they have a hard time finding a dress that fits their age. The biggest challenge is choosing a dress that would be sophisticated, elegant, not too extravagant, sexy but still not overdone.

In this article I would like to discuss how a senior dancer can deal with these and other challenges and perhaps offer some ideas and insights for their next competition dress.

The challenge for a senior dancer is to have a costume that covers the problem areas, making the costume comfortable to wear but not making it look too boring.

One of the most common mistakes I see regularly on the dance floor is a conservative, long-sleeved dress that should be made entirely of solid/non-sheer materials.

If such a dress has a very interesting draping or decoration – it will look very boring and also ordinary. But we must make a different impression.

One way to change this impression is to combine two colors in one dress and make different patterns. Two colors will break the image of a solid dress, will help shape the silhouette as we need it.

Another common mistake that an older dancer tends to make is looking for dark, dark colors. Especially if there are concerns about the body. Many prefer black. But this is not always the best choice.

As I pointed out in my previous articles on ballroom dance fashion, black is traditionally considered a safe choice, but it should be considered the last option for dance competitions.

Opting for light, deep colors – like emerald, royal blue, deep burgundy would be a safe alternative to black. A smartly designed dress would shape the silhouette of the body in a way to mask the problematic areas, by using lace or appliqués.

I also love pastel colors on senior dancers a lot. The soft silver tone of natural gray hair color pairs well with clean pastels and looks wonderfully soft on a dance floor.

Adult dancers need good support for their bust. This problem is also common for younger dancers who have a large bust. When choosing a dress, be sure to choose one with wide nude straps on both shoulders and across the back. Stay away from thin straps that tend to dig into your shoulders. If your cup size is D+ consider an extra strap across the back for better support.

It’s fine to show bare thongs in a party dress, but some of the dancers don’t like it. In this case, you can choose a dress with bare / colored mesh sleeves. The back straps are a little harder to hide. You can choose a higher cut, or use some complicated cuts that would hide the diagonal straps completely (see picture). However, I personally don’t see anything drastic about leaving it open.

Many of the senior dancing couples have a slightly sunken posture, so I would recommend using massive accessories or frills that accentuate the area. The best option – thin layer of mesh decorated with scattered rhinestones – no clear mesh going through the area. Also creating a dress with a horizontal pattern on the back would also drive attention away from sloppy.

As I have already pointed out in my previous articles on ballroom fashion, there is nothing better than fringes to accentuate hip action. For additional advice – check out my article on how to choose a dress that will help you dance better

If you have any problem areas around the waist, no folds on the back, stay away from thin very stretchy materials like dance crepe or angel skin or mesh used for the bodice. Best choice would be still thick lycra/biflex, or even stretchy velvet – fabrics that would give a good tight hug to the bodice. Another option is to make very thin drapes on the bodice, with net or angel skin, like the fuchsia dress in the pictures above.
