Concept Art And Character Design – Ewelina Bielska Overall, I can say that the mentorship has helped me progress much faster than I would have otherwise and saved me valuable time figuring things out on my own.

Ewelina is an advanced concept artist and illustrator who designs attractive characters with creativity. She is very passionate about the idea of development and focus, which has helped her advance her design.

Concept Art And Character Design

I’m Ewelina and I’m a second year student studying Animation at the University of Dundee, Scotland. Animated films were the first thing that introduced me to art; I remember watching the special features on my Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron DVD when I was about 8 years old and when I saw the characters being animated my jaw dropped.

Unfortunately, I never thought I could do anything remotely as great as this as a career, and my occasional writings here and there didn’t last long until I decided to take drawing lessons when I was 16. Although that was still a minor thing, there I mostly focused on homework and was often too tired after even thinking about drawing. When I think back on that time now, I realize that I was never properly taught the basics of art or able to get used to drawing every day, which led to great frustration. I was busy redrawing pictures of art teachers for a good 2-3 years before I discovered digital speed pictures on YouTube, which opened me up to the wonderful world of conceptual art. I can only talk about how I started to really “create” art from that point on.

I’m slowly but surely taking the next steps towards becoming a professional artist and taking online art classes is an important milestone!

I had a lot of problems because as I said, I didn’t have a good foundation, firstly I didn’t know anyone who could help me: none of my friends were artists and none of the art teachers recognized the existence of digital art. So I was in the dark and tried to follow some YouTube courses or make fanart. However, because I didn’t get enough feedback, I kept making mistakes, which I sometimes repeat without realizing it. Now that I know what to look out for, I’m sure I can make faster progress.

Overall, we managed to work on three character designs that I could freely imagine. Starting with original mood boards and character backstories, we discussed some early explorations and why some of them work and others don’t, given the amount of detail and focused art style. David often stressed the importance of choosing good reference images that don’t create too much visual noise. It has also helped me improve the body proportions of my designs to make them more visually appealing while keeping the anatomy correct and believable. Two of the characters I designed belonged to the same imaginary world, so I learned about different visual perspectives and color choices that make them more unified. I wanted to use a different design approach for the third figure, so I focused on developing the shape language and line quality, two skills where I saw the greatest improvement.

By going through the conceptual phase one at a time and going back when necessary, I was able to make my planning and thinking process more organized and deliberate – now I know how important it is to have a clear idea in mind.

In the rendering phase, I was shown how to paint as cleanly as possible and add light to highlight key design elements. It was very valuable for me as I often add too much detail and my previous designs tended to be a bit messy.

Throughout the guide, I had the opportunity to ask questions or request a more detailed explanation of David’s feedback and redesign, which helped me understand which areas to focus on moving forward. All in all, I can say that online concept art mentoring has made me progress much faster than I would have otherwise and saved me valuable time searching for things on my own.

It was challenging, sometimes frustrating. It was very useful, helpful and insightful. David not only shared his artistic knowledge, but also explained how things work behind the scenes in the conceptual art industry. With detailed repaints as well as entertaining conversations and informative tips and tricks, I was able to push myself to work hard to redesign things based on his feedback, even if it took multiple efforts. I could imagine that I was getting better quickly. I really appreciated that David took the time to give us brief feedback between sessions. This allowed me to produce higher quality portfolio pieces.

I compared it to other online schools like CGMA and quickly realized that I already knew many artists’ works. The mentoring aspect also played an important role for me; I knew I needed someone who would respond more personally to me, my art, and its shortcomings, rather than just giving students general assignments in class. The fact that the teaching artists are already in the companies I want to join helps me make the decision; Learning directly from them is an exciting opportunity and improves my chances of being employed there in the future.

I plan to continue creating stylized character concepts, incorporating what I learned during the character design tutorial with David. My main goal right now is to build a strong portfolio that will help me get student internships at Riot Games and Sixmorevodka. To improve my photography craft, I decided to take a second online art class, this time with Monika Pałosz. With the advice and feedback from two great mentors, I am confident that I will be prepared for the artistic journey ahead.

They are now classic science fiction and really good. The series also spawned some story-based games. Anyway, let’s create a character sheet for Riddick’s female character. To do this we have to add the character sheet with the words and it is always good to choose an artist to quote. We use Yoji Shinkawa, a good character artist for the Metal Gear series. If you’re not looking for good character artists, I highly recommend it. Let’s start with the soup.

It’s a great start. However, we need a little more detail. One thing Riddick had was a pair of welding goggles. Let’s add that to the incentive.

I honestly didn’t expect it to be this quick, but version 1 is great. Let’s make some changes.

This looks pretty good. We’ll discuss a few things we could have done more of next time. Next time we will make sure the character design has a complete body. I was pretty happy with almost everything about this image. I will probably revisit this universe because it is very interesting. So similar and yet so different. Today we tried to clarify who the concept artist and character designer is.

A character designer is a character illustrator who develops an idea and artwork for a character using expressive drawings. It’s a creative process. They translate appearance, personality and mannerisms. For example, they create the gestures, costumes, facial expressions and body movements of each character.

Good character designers use their artistic skills to create recognizable characters in different shapes and concepts. They create fictional versions of each character in different contexts and from different perspectives. This gives them a better understanding of the character’s body, possible reactions to different situations, and character development over the course of the game.
