When I was a child, our family’s preparations for Diwali began weeks before the actual festival. The atmosphere at home and the city market become hot at the same time. People naturally create memories by decorating the interior and exterior of their homes. However, for those of us living outside India, the situation may be different.

Outside India, most people do not celebrate Diwali. There is not much enthusiasm for Diwali outside the home or in the markets. Nonetheless, we do our best to teach and pass on our cultural traditions to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories we do.

Every Diwali, I try to excite my kids with all kinds of decorations, lights and firecrackers. Now they look forward to this day every year. Even if you don’t have time to implement all the ideas presented here due to your busy schedule, do your best. Doing something is better than doing nothing. I’m sharing some ideas for Diwali decorations in my home that you can use as a whole or break it down into sections that suit you.

Diwali is the festival of lights. The exterior decorative lighting is my husband’s responsibility and he is really active and attracts the attention of everyone nearby. Photos don’t do justice to the effort, but the overall effect of the lighting is stunning.

He hired a professional installer to install the roof liner lights, which cost about $500. He can do the rest of the lighting himself, as it can be safely accessed using a standard household ladder. Programmable LED rope lights were used in the circles around the driveway and lampposts. He decided to use mesh LED lights for tree trunks, house posts, and large flower pots. Regular LED string lights are used to create a pyramid around the pole.

Kids love helping with Diwali decorations and make it a family project. Toddlers are busy maintaining stakes for rope lights, while middle schoolers come up with ideas and pass tools to their dads on the ladder.

To power your lights, use appropriate GFCI protection circuitry and take electrical hazard precautions when installing your lights.

In Indian tradition, doors have a special meaning. Many Indian traditions revolve around decorating and performing various rituals at the entrance of the house or in the puja room. The same applies to Diwali decorations.

During my last visit to India. These are common items I buy every time I visit India. Diya refers to an earthen lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. Today, decorative diyas can be purchased at Indian grocery stores in almost every major city in the United States. If you don’t have time to go to your local store, you can also buy it on Amazon.

After much research, I decided to use artificial flowers I found on Amazon. I am pleased with the overall quality, feel and appearance of the flowers. I also used fresh flowers from my garden and local stores. Lighting was purchased from Pier1 Imports.

Creative Festive Decoration Ideas For Diwali

You can choose colors and flowers to make your rangoli. I have a young child, so powder colors didn’t seem like a good idea. So, I chose a simple design that could be created quickly in 10 to 15 minutes by combining natural flowers and artificial flowers.

Did you see the URL in front of Rangoli? Urli are brass vessels used to hold floating candles and flowers, adding a different dimension to festive or ethnic decorations. Floating candles and flowers bring life to otherwise static decor.

Next is the entrance foyer, the first thing visitors see to your home. It creates first impressions and expectations so people can see what else is out there. It should convey the festive feel of your home while also creating a desire to get into the festive mood. The lobby décor shown here features a centerpiece of Lord Ganesh sitting atop a beaded medallion table runner, surrounded by centerpieces made from brass relics and decorative tealight candle holders.

I used an existing bracelet as a tea light candle holder, it’s inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a large bracelet collection, so I borrowed a few from here to decorate my tea lights.

Ganesha is a gift from my brother-in-law. Here brass bowls were used as urlis. There is no need to buy Urlis or use brass bowls to add Urlis as decoration. You can achieve the same effect using a shallow bowl with a flat top.

In the photo above, kundan rangolis have been used as floor decoration. Alternatively, you can also use a Rangoli design as shown below. In my case it only lasted a few hours because my child was running.

By adding small decorations to different places inside your home, you can change the overall look and feel of your home and make it more festive. For example, I decorated the coffee table in my living room with candles and flowers.

It’s easy to see that I’m a huge fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decoration are from that store. All items – tablecloths, trays, candles – are from Pier1 Imports and have been collected by me over the years. I am constantly going through the house using different combinations to create new decorations.

I have a large collection of runners and trays. They are my weaknesses. So whenever I see a good designer piece, I buy it for future use. The palette provided clear space and an attractive focal point, allowing focus in a limited space. Runners add different textures to the space, bringing color contrast and further enhancing other decorative elements. We also filled the space with kundan rangolis to give it an ethnic feel.

Another example is the fireplace decoration, which is often the centerpiece of living rooms in American homes. You can create beautiful ethnic decorations by placing a few craft items in the space right in front of the fireplace hearth and stove.

Here, a combination of three individual elements was used to create diversity with the common purpose of showcasing India’s diverse ethnic elements. Two beautifully decorated elephant heads along with nettipattam combined with brass work were used. During my visit to Kerala, I fell in love with the adorable Neti Pattam elephant head and couldn’t resist adding it to my collection. I love the authenticity they add to every space I use.

Lastly, the most important places to decorate in your home for Diwali are the pooja room and temple. Laxmi Puja is the most important part of the entire Diwali festival and is performed in the puja room of the temple. Due to the nature of my husband’s job, our family moves every few years. So, as much as I would like to have a separate chapel, I currently have to share it with the office.

So I used a handmade wooden temple with Rajasthani artwork and a matching backdrop. This background is made of tulle fabric and decorated with peacock feathers, pearl bandhanwar and pearl ropes. The ends of the tulle fabric are tied using brass elephant dia. This setting amplifies the puja corner.

The door of the pooja room that I share with my home office is also decorated with pandanvas and flowers. Try adding small details like Satiya stickers, Maha-Laxmi footprint stickers. Swastikas are associated with Ganesha and Maha-Laxmi footprints are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details greatly enhance the effect of the decoration.
