Looking for a job is one of the hardest things we can go through. Uncertainty, combined with pressure for minimum safe callbacks, can build to devastating levels. Designers everywhere are sweating over the perfect UX portfolio, so we thought we’d give them a little help.
That’s why we invited design manager Kristini Yuen and senior UX designer Ulrika Anderson to the discussion. We wanted to know what they’re looking for in a candidate’s UX portfolio and their thoughts on how designers can prepare it.

A UX design portfolio consists of a series of case studies from previous projects. Their purpose is to show how you approach the UX process and who you are as a designer. Our speakers wanted to show how important these classes are because employers will not only notice your design results. They also care about how you think.
There are many ways designers can build their portfolio – and include many different things. Having said that, Kristine introduces us to the most common elements that make up a designer’s portfolio.
The 9 Best Ux Portfolio Examples Around The World
Most of your portfolio will likely be made up of your studies. Kristine recommends including 4-6 lessons – it should be a good number and a number that allows you to assess your skills. You can always include more than 6 credits, but you risk upsetting the employer and lowering your credit score.
One of Christine’s general tips is to present your strongest and most comprehensive case first. This will help you make a good first impression and reduce the risk of employers only looking at your original situation. Some prefer to show their most recent status first, but you really want to make a good first impression.
It’s also important to add scanning scenarios since most recruiters have a long list of candidates and limited time to analyze each portfolio, but we’ll get to that later.
As a UX designer, you may have more than 4 or 6 projects. So how do you decide which one to include? Luckily our speaker Ulrika came up with a portfolio matrix and we’re glad she did.
10 Tips To Organize Your Design Portfolio
The idea is that you list your projects and analyze them according to several parameters. Here are Ulrika’s recommendations:
Once you list all of them and related information, you will notice the strong points. This could be as simple as several different projects focused on solving usability problems, or more experience with consumer-facing products.
The way this matrix helps you choose the right projects for your portfolio is that by looking at those strengths (and weaknesses too), you can measure them. By choosing the right projects, you can showcase all of your best skills and minimize those that are underdeveloped.
