In my childhood, preparations for Diwali in our family would start a few weeks before the actual festival. Indoor and urban market conditions will improve at the same time. People are naturally inspired to create memories by decorating both inside and outside your home. However, it may be slightly different for those of us who live outside India.

Outside India, most of the population does not celebrate Diwali. There is no special enthusiasm about Diwali outside our house or in the market. Nevertheless, we have tried our best to impart and pass on our cultural heritage to our children. We want their childhood memories to be the same as ours.

Every Diwali, I try to create excitement among the children with all the decorations, lights and fireworks. Now they wait for it every year. Even if busy schedule does not allow time to implement all the ideas presented here, still do what you can. Something is better than nothing. I am sharing some ideas from my home Diwali decoration, which you can use completely or in pieces that suit you.

Diwali is the festival of lights. My husband is responsible for everything beyond the decorative lighting, and he really makes it look spectacular, attracting the attention of everyone around. Photos don’t do the effort justice, but the overall effect of the light was breathtaking.

They used professional installers for the ceiling lining lights, which cost about $500. He could do the rest of the lighting work himself as it was safely accessible up the stairs of a regular house. For the driveway and the circle around the lamppost, they used programmable LED rope lights. They decided to install net-style LED lights for the tree trunks, house poles and large planters. Regular LED string lighting was used to create pyramids around the lampposts.

Children love helping with Diwali decorations, making it a family project. The child was busy handling nails for the rope lights, while the middle school student presented his idea and passed the tools to his father on the stairs.

Please ensure you are using an appropriate GFCI protected circuit to power your lights and take electrical hazard precautions when installing the lights.

The main gate has special significance in Indian tradition. Many Indian traditions revolve around decorating the entrance or puja room of the house and performing various ceremonies. The same thing applies to Diwali decorations also.

During my last visit to India. These are some common items that I get from India every time. Diya refers to an earthen lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. Nowadays, you can buy decorative diyas at Indian grocery stores in almost all major cities in the United States. They are also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit a local store.

After a lot of research, I decided to use artificial flowers available on Amazon. I was pleased with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I used some fresh flowers from my garden and local shops. The lamps were purchased from Pier 1 Imports.

You have the option to make rangoli with both colors and flowers. Since I have a baby, powder paint doesn’t seem like a good idea. So I chose a simple design that can be made quickly in 10 to 15 minutes by combining natural and fake flowers.

Urli seen in front of Rangoli? Urli, a brass bowl for holding floating candles and flowers, adds a different dimension to any festive or ethnic decor. It breathes life into your static decor with dynamism with floating candles and flowers.

The next entry is the lobby, which is the first glimpse any visitor gets inside your home. It creates a first impression and anticipation to see what else is out there. It will bring out the festive mood of your home and inspire you to immerse yourself in the festive mood. The lobby decor presented here uses a Ganesha statue as the centerpiece seated on a medallion table runner and surrounded by brass artwork and decor consisting of decorative tea-light candle holders.

I used my existing bangles as tealight candle holders, which are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a large collection of bangles, so I borrowed some bangles to adorn the teal here.

The idol of Ganesha was gifted to us by my brother-in-law. Here, I have used brass bowls as uralis. To add uralis as part of the decor, you don’t need to buy them or use brass bowls. You can use any flat-topped shallow bowl to create the same effect.

In the above picture, I have used Kundan Rangoli to decorate the floor. Alternatively, you can use a rangoli design like the image below. In my case, with the baby running around, it only lasted a few hours.

Indoors, you can make small decorations at different places to change the overall look and feel of your home and make it more festive. For example, I decorated my living room coffee table with candles and flowers.

As you can easily see I’m a big fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of these decor items are from that store. Whether you’re looking at table runners, or trays and candles, all items are from Pier1 Imports that I’ve collected over time. I keep rotating them around the house to create new decorations using different combinations.

Introduction To Diwali And Its Significance In Home Decor

I have a nice collection of runners and trays. They are my weakness. So, whenever I see a nice designer piece, I buy it for future use. The tray provides a defined space and focal point of attraction, allowing me to concentrate in a limited space. Runners add a different texture to the space and help bring out color contrast and enhance other decor elements. I used Kundan Rangoli as a filler at that spot to give an ethnic touch.

Another example is the decoration of the fireplace, which is usually the focal point of the living room in an American home. You can create a beautiful ethnic decor by placing some patterns on the fireplace hearth and the space right in front of the stove.

Here, I have used a combination of three independent elements to create diversity with a common objective of showing the different ethnic elements of India. I have used two beautifully decorated elephant heads with nettipattam along with brass musical artwork. During my trip to Kerala I fell in love with the adorable Nettipattam elephant heads and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I like the fact that they add flair to whatever space they are used in.

The last but the most important place to decorate your home on the occasion of Diwali is the puja house and temples. Lakshmi Puja is the most important element of the entire Diwali celebration, which is performed in the puja room of the temple. Due to the nature of my husband’s work my family relocates every few years. So, although I would like to have a separate puja room, I have to share it with the office at present.

So, I use a handmade wooden temple with Rajasthani work with matching background. For this backdrop, tulle fabric decorated with peacock feathers, pearl bands and strings of pearls is used. The edges of the tulle fabric are tied using brass elephant dias. This setup widens the pooja corner.

The door of the puja room, which I share with my home office, is also decorated with Bandhanwars and flowers. Try adding small details like Satya stickers and Maha-Lakshmi footprint stickers. The Swastika is associated with Ganesha, and the footprints of Maha-Lakshmi are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details add greatly to the impact of your decor.
