Decoration Diy – Jump into spring by making these beautiful 3D DIY butterfly paper ornaments! They’re fun and easy to make, and you can decorate them in a variety of ways!
The first day of spring is approaching, can you feel it? Maybe not yet, but I’m sure spring is already here for many of you! These adorable DIY butterfly decorations will fill your home with a spring feeling, even if the season isn’t here yet. 🙂
Decoration Diy
I recently decorated a spring vignette that I will share soon and I wanted to include butterflies. After all, butterflies always remind us of spring, don’t they?
Dollar Tree High End Ornament Diy
When making the butterflies, I wanted them to look like they were sitting there flapping their wings, so I decided to make more 3D paper butterflies. I really love how they turned out and the best part is they are completely customizable!
I chose the purple cardstock color to coordinate my butterflies with my spring vignette. However, you can use any patterned cardstock in any color to make butterflies! They fit into almost any decorating scheme. If you’re not a fan of color, just use neutral colored cardstock. 🙂
I can think of all kinds of uses for these butterflies! You can arrange them on the wall in flowing patterns as wall art, or stick them on canvas to create a beautiful piece of art. Another use is to simply place them in a vignette like I did! I also think they would make a cute wreath! Just wrap them in a simple vine wreath decorated with Spanish moss and other greenery.

I’ve included this free downloadable template for four different butterflies. Each butterfly comes in three sizes, so you can use the size that works best for the job you’re doing. Simply print the butterfly on a piece of cardstock. Then use sharp scissors to cut out the butterfly template.
Using the butterfly template of your choice, trace it onto your colored/patterned paper or cardstock. To speed up the process, you can fold the paper in half and cut out two butterflies at once! 🙂
Here are some cutting tips. Cut out the butterfly, leaving a fold line at the end that will hold the two butterflies together until the end. Also, when you cut into a sharp corner, cut through the corner and approach it another way. This allows for sharp corners. 😉 After cutting out the first set of butterflies, I noticed that you could see the outline of the pen, so I started tracing the template onto the back of the cardstock.

By folding the cardstock in half, you’ll end up with two identical copies of the same butterfly! The main reason you wouldn’t want to do this is if you want to target a specific area of the butterfly pattern. Then you have to follow it to get to that exact place. Since I’m using a very thick board, this doesn’t really matter. Plus, you can choose your favorite butterfly pattern as the top layer! 😉
I used 2-3 layers for each butterfly. Sometimes I use two colored butterflies, sometimes I use cream script with a butterfly pattern in the middle. I also used two colorful butterflies in the middle. They turned out great too! Whichever one you use, make sure it’s from the same butterfly template.
To make the butterfly antenna, I cut two small pieces of twine of the same size. These range in size from 3/4 inch to 1.5 inches.
To achieve the 3D look, you need to fold the butterfly’s wings. This is easily done by drawing a line where the wing meets the butterfly’s body. I just used my fingernails, but you could use something with a dull edge, like a butter knife. Fold the wings fully in and then release. Do the same thing with the other wing. Now the butterfly looks like it has wings on it. Repeat this step for all three layers of butterflies.

To assemble the butterfly, the first step is to glue the antenna to the base layer. Position them so that the curves of the corners are separated from each other. Glue each additional layer by adding hot glue to only the body part of the butterfly. Try placing the butterfly directly in the front row.
Fold the wings a little further with each layer. Now you have a butterfly that looks like it’s flapping its wings. 🙂
Another optional extra step is to color the body of the butterfly with a black marker. I don’t like to do this to most butterflies, but to small butterflies.
I went crazy making these cute little butterflies! It’s fun to see the effect of each page with a different pattern.
