Design Ideas For Corner Linen Closet

Design Ideas For Corner Linen Closet – This week I decided to tackle our linen closet that was starting to get out of control.  It was time to organize it and see if we could create some extra space.  It only took a few hours to go through everything, clean everything, organize and put everything back in its new home.  It’s perfect for organizing projects to complete during the week.  You don’t have to dedicate all day to this, just set aside a few hours and find another organized space and keep it that way (at least that’s the plan)!

.)    I decided to start at the bottom with all the sheets, pillowcases, towels and blankets and started removing everything from the bottom half of the linen closet and placing it outside and on the floor.

.)    Now that everything was empty I took the opportunity to clean and disinfect all the shelves.  This is the best time to do a general cleaning of the space, as it is one of the few times the cabinet is completely empty.

.)    Now that the closet is clean, we can figure out what needs to be put back in the space.  Start by sorting everything you have and group those items together.  Towels in one pile, sheets in another.  While you’re sorting things out, see what you have.  Do you still need all these things?  Some of my towels were too old to throw in a pile and use as rags in the garage.  Anything that’s old, falling apart, or that you know you’ll never use, you don’t need it.  It’s time for us to part.

.)    Now it’s time to start organizing the items you have.  In my closet, the towels were divided into two shelves and the towels we used were towards the back.  I’m going to change that and put all the towels on the top shelf.  To organize them better, separate bath towels from hand towels and face cloths.  Now fold all the towels of each type in the same way so that everything is neatly stacked.  We now have beautiful piles of towels, washcloths and hand towels.  The white towels on the right side of the photo are the oldest bathroom towels I currently use for the dogs.  (There would be more bath towels left, but it’s laundry day so the closet looks a little emptier than usual)

.)    Once the towels are back, it’s time to organize the sheets and blankets.  I organized all the blankets into piles of each blanket together.  The easiest and most effective way to do this is to carefully fold the fitted sheet and flatten it with whatever pillowcase you have to go with it.  Then you will take one of the pillowcases and place the entire set inside it.  Now you have a nice, clean, easy-to-stack package of each sheet set.  This makes it easy to see which set it is and easy to remove for guests or when changing sheets.

.)    As you can see in our after photo, we stacked the set of blankets and throws on the right side.  Just by changing the configuration where the towels and sheets were we created more space and left some extra space to put more sheets in this closet which will free up space in the rest of the house.  Now everything is organized and easy to see and access whatever you need.  Time to attack the chief of staff.

.)    Again we will start by removing everything from the top of the case.  We left the top shelf alone today because it’s extra glass that can’t be stored in the kitchen.  This was just added and is fixed as best as possible at this time.  We are removing everything else.  The bottom shelf holds extra makeup, nail tools, and extra toiletries for the bathrooms.  The middle shelf contains wrapping paper, gift bags, ribbons, baskets, etc.

.)    Once everything is removed, use this time to clean the shelves and begin the sorting process.  I made a shelf of this at one point.  I went through all the makeup and lotions and threw away anything that was too old.  So I threw away the things I hadn’t used in the last 6 months and knew I would never use.  Anything like that should be thrown away.

.)    Now start separating these items more specifically.  I had makeup, lotion, body wash, travel items, manicure and pedicure tools, nail polish, etc. Group similar items together and get ready to organize into containers.  By organizing these things in separate containers, it is easy to remove them from the closet when necessary, without disturbing the organization of everything else.  All the manicure and pedicure items went into an old caboodle I had (yes, I still have my caboodle).  All of the lotions and body washes were matched by scent and organized in a basket.  I put the oldest in the front and the newest in the back of the basket, so I use the oldest material first.  Then I organized all the small travel items in another basket.  This left me with just a few boxes of extra stuff to organize that didn’t go in the basket.  Now I put everything back in the closet in an orderly manner to make better use of the space and make everything accessible.

.) Now separate all the gift bags and packaging materials.  As we already have boxes of Christmas decorations well stored in the garage we decided to separate everything by holiday, box it up and put it in the garage along with the decorations.  This solution works because it is the only time of year when we will need this type of packaging.  We decided to keep our birthday stuff in this closet since we have birthdays to celebrate all year round.  We stack all the bags on the right side.  Then we fold all the tissue paper well and place it in a smaller bag to store it.

.) Since we moved a lot of packing materials to another space, some closet spaces were freed up.  I have piles of extra yarn and a basket of crochet supplies that haven’t been this pretty hanging in the corner of our living room since before last Thanksgiving.  He decided to use this space to organize extra wires and the supply basket.  The basket contains supplies and yarn for current projects.  This makes it easy to remove when working on projects and replace when finished to keep clutter out of the living room.  It’s also a great place to store extra yarn, so now I can see what I have without having to search through multiple bags.

.) Now you can sit back and enjoy having a nice, clean, and organized linen closet.  We hope you were able to find some extra space to help clear the clutter in the rest of your home.
