Generating Design Ideas – Idea Generation is the platform to get your creative juices flowing! Come up with as many ideas as possible so that you can filter them to determine the most important ideas for further development.

There are no right or wrong ideas, I recommend drawing what you think has potential. Then you can see which one is more successful than others.

On this page I’ll introduce you to techniques you can use to showcase different design approaches in your paper.

Design Thinking: Integrating Ideation Into The Creative Process

Brain calming is setting aside time (e.g. 10 minutes) to focus on generating ideas. This method forces you to simply ‘wet’ ideas onto paper, efficiently resulting in more ideas.

Add icons next to your drawings/photos to show your appreciation for each design. The commentary should explain your choice of PMI icon.

Using action verbs/adjectives you can experiment with depicting movements and actions through visual communication. This works especially well with communication plans.

Although hand drawing (including digital drawings) is the primary means of recording your ideas, there is nothing stopping you from using materials such as paper to generate ideas.

Especially if you work in industrial or environmental design communications, it’s important to play with physical materials to understand the three-dimensional properties that materials can produce.

The first two images show idea generation using existing products as initial inspiration. The existing products that are used have nothing to do with fixed holders.

Product Design Sprint

The Decision Matrix is an easy way to choose the best idea from several good ideas. Here I have selected five ideas for consideration, one of which will be selected for development. I have established a number of criteria that determine the characteristics to consider the best idea. Then use the weights and ratings for each idea to calculate.

Attribute list or morphological analysis (and SCAMPER) are not just idea generation tools. They can also be used for refinement purposes.

Individual components/functions are selected one by one to make changes one by one. e.g. I choose the body to make changes in shapes and forms. Then I referred to the morphological table and looked under ‘shape’, which could be a circle, square or triangle. As with different cross-sectional shapes. At this point I would like to consider the overall functionality if you change something, in this case the shape of the cross section. The change will affect how it functions (or how it holds/stores pens or pencils) or ‘legs’ how to install, etc.

Above is an example of my student’s chosen development idea. I applied attributes to each part of the object (in this case the different parts of the fish) and made some further refinements to the shape and form. It is useless to develop the form of the solution regardless of its functionality. A simple way to consider features is to pull your pens, pencils, and/or rulers into your proposed holders (or whatever you’re designing) with each iteration you create. Note that other aspects such as ergonomics, dimensions, materials, connection methods, etc., which play a role in any shape change, are not specifically discussed here. However, if these considerations arise as you develop the product, you should start working on them at the same time. For example, when I change a body with inverted triangular cross-section to a body with rounded rectangular cross-section, a change in materials or connection methods may be required. How To Generate Fresh Ideas For Graphic Design Projects

During the development phase comes the time to adjust the dimensions of the individual parts and ultimately the overall dimensions of the product. There are three ways you can get that data:

1) The use of critical dimensions (i.e. objects that hold/store/interact with the product) to determine the amount of space required, leading to the size of the components that make up the solution.

2) The use of anthropometric data (i.e. measuring the relevant body parts and their relative end points) to determine the critical heights of certain parts/features (e.g. the height of a chair or the highest shelf, etc.) (maximum or minimum ) dimensions of a solution.

3) Making use of the surface/volume of the environmental space where the product is used or placed. Usually you have a maximum or minimum amount of space for the new solution. This can be a good starting point for setting a minimum or maximum size for your new solution.

Project Ideas Generated With Triz

In the example above I know that multiple pencils need to be placed. To determine the width of the storage space, I use the diameter of the pencil side. I want to stack the pencil up to a maximum of 2 layers. So I use twice the diameter of a regular pencil to determine what the minimum height of the ‘side panels’ should be. In the end I made it 20mm.

To obtain data on critical dimensions, measure the relevant characteristics of the items you want to keep or store (and average equivalents). In this case, for me the average diameter and length of a pencil was very important
