Art doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful. Sometimes a simple pattern drawing or repeating a pattern can create amazing art. I like to tell people that if you can draw a circle, you are an artist. Some of my favorite patterns to draw include simple circles or dots.

Patterns don’t always have to be complicated. It’s easy to transform basic shapes and lines into beautiful textures and patterns. One of my favorite things to do is to take a shape and then repeat it over and over again in different colors across the page. If I wanted to mix it up, I would resize the shape throughout the pattern.
Below is a simple example of using a heart to create a pattern. I left a small white accent in the upper left corner of each heart to give it a more bubbly look. A repeating pattern made with different colors is one of my favorite sketchbook doodles.
What I love is that something so simple takes all the stress out of drawing. If you want to solve a problem, try a repeating pattern using circles, dots or simple shapes.
For this doodle I made small circles using only bright colors. Finally I placed the circles together in curved rows to create the rainbow shape.

Linear patterns can be drawn by hand or with a ruler. I prefer freehand because it gives the artwork a more natural look. However, if you want to create geometric patterns, using a roller can be helpful for those intricate designs.
Lines are not necessarily straight. Try curved lines in a basic rainbow shape. Or expand your creativity and try using different design elements to create interesting patterns with horizontal lines.
One way to improve drawing patterns is to create a grid in your sketchbook that contains a group of different patterns.
Here are some of my favorite patterns. For all of them, I usually use a pen when I draw these patterns, but you can try them with other mediums as well. These templates are perfect for filling an entire page or filling small sections of a design.

For the bubble pattern, start by making small and large circles. To create a rounded effect, I left a small white highlight at the top of each circle.
Choosing a single Zen Tangle pattern for a vintage album cover is a great way to create a repeating pattern.
Try experimenting with different sized circles to create a unique textured design. If you want to reduce the time required for this doodle, try making only one page or part of it.
This pattern consists of raindrops that also look like petals. Add raindrops and change their direction. No need to sort out how to draw each blob, just fill in the space as you go.

Mandala patterns are more complicated than other patterns, but with a little practice they can be very simple.
Traditionally, mandalas are circular in design, but today you often see mandala designs used in different ways, such as filling in different shapes and patterns.
One of my favorite ways to use a mandala design is to create a shape or fill it with mandala lines.
If you want to expand your pattern design, try mixing different patterns. You can also use patterns and shapes to create images in your design.

Even if you just cover the page with a variety of patterns, you can create cool designs that are easy to create. Another great way to combine patterns is to take a shape, paint it in one pattern across the page, and then create a different pattern in each shape.
There are all kinds of materials and drawing tools that can be used to create patterns. But you don’t need a bunch of fancy accessories to practice pattern drawing. Sometimes it’s as simple as just using a pencil and a piece of paper.
When it comes to drawing patterns, it’s great to have both markers and fine markers on hand. Wider nibs will allow you to create bolder and brighter designs, while finer nibs are perfect for intricate patterns and small details.
Although you can use a sheet of paper to create the pattern, I prefer to keep my patterns in a sketchbook so I can keep them all in place and look at previous patterns for inspiration.

Think outside the box when it comes to the surface you’re painting the pattern on. It doesn’t always have to be paper!
If you’re working on a surface other than paper, such as rocks, wood chips, or ceramics, markers are a great option for creating patterns. You can also use a felt tip pen to apply to the paper, but be careful not to smudge the paint as it takes a bit longer to dry than a normal felt tip pen.

Don’t overthink things. Just sit down with paper, pen or pencil and start drawing. If you can’t think of a pattern to draw, choose a shape to draw multiple times across the page. You can also create a grid of patterns or a cheat sheet when you can’t think of what to draw.
Drop the pencil and pick up the pen instead. Drawing patterns is all about relaxing and just letting the art flow. Don’t worry about making mistakes or doing something wrong. There is no right or wrong way to draw a pattern.
Of course! Have fun experimenting with design and different drawing elements. Sometimes I like to combine multiple pattern ideas like shapes and lines to create a new pattern.
Drawing patterns is a great way to relax and an easy way to create art. Whether you are a beginner artist or someone who has been making art for a long time, painting patterns is a fun and enjoyable process.
