Design Ideas For Living Room Shelves
Although it seems like a simple, self-explanatory step to many, it is often the rule that is most forgotten or ignored. Order. Get rid of any junk that needs to be thrown out, get rid of anything you don’t use anymore, and donate anything that might be good but you no longer love. A common shelf mistake we see is to mark too many (often small) items.

Think of it this way: the more items you have on a shelf, the less impact each item has. Some pieces are even large and impressive enough to stand alone on a shelf. Having a few small pieces of jewelry that you like is great when stocking shelves, but make sure you keep a good mix of jewelry and nothing more than you need, especially if when it comes to the shelves of the living room.
Now that everything is clean and tidy, consider the bookcase itself before you begin. Don’t like what you’re working on? Browse our collection of custom bookcases and signboards for an updated look. The Brentley, Oriana, and Worthington are some of our most popular items!
Or, if you have bookcases, try covering the back of the unit with paint, fabric or wallpaper for a dramatic change. Marking the back of a shelf gives a sense of depth that can be lost, and can provide an additional element or contrast to the shelf itself. Check out the photos above and below for some inspiration!
Whether you’re a big reader and have a library full of comics, or you have a few favorites that you use for pickup, decorating shelves should start with books. How to start? Stack your books in small stacks and place them upside down and horizontally with a splash of color together for a stacked but pulled-together look. . Sorting by color is another method, but only use this sorting method if you have a lot of books on your shelf and each color will be enough books for a large collection.
Styling Tips For A More Beautiful Bookshelf
Sorting by color is also better for sorting a shelf that contains mostly books than a picture of different things. The number of books in each stack will depend on the size of your books and the height and width of your shelves, but stacks should contain at least three books or more than. More than twelve or fifteen books may be too many. We also like to play with how stacks are arranged on a shelf: some shelves can be stacked all up, some all horizontally, and some can mix it up!
Because the shelves offer a lot of filling space, balance and visual weight play a big role in organizing things. Make sure your shelves aren’t so full that they start looking like a Chinese store in New York City, but too thin, and your jewelry will get lost in an empty box.
When installing shelves, large pieces of sculpture can stand alone while smaller pieces of sculpture should be integrated or used as a focal point in a vignette or collection of books. Your shelves should also have some form. Take a look at a signboard we did for a recent client:
Notice the parallelism between the top left and right shelves and the bottom left and right shelves, creating four strong corners to build everything else. You can also see how each column and row distributes heavy decorations (black letters) and light decorations (black and gold).
Decorating With Leaning + Ladder Shelves
As with most things in design, it’s important to have a clear and consistent color palette when styling shelves. See the picture above. White and cream bookcases create a rich and airy feel. Mix the nickel metal with decorative metal, and the room looks complete with special use.
As you read this post and scroll through the photos, you’ll see that whether it’s bright, neutral, or muted, the palette for a good makeup palette usually includes a base color and then the highlight color. This is a good practice, but don’t be afraid to experiment and bend the rules and throw a third color in.
Artwork is often an overlooked item that works wonders on a shelf. It adds character, and allows you to express your design creativity. Place a piece of paper on it, or hang large pieces of paper on the cross of the sign for a more “library” look. The artwork also draws the eye to the back of the shelf and allows for a deeper visual experience.
Keep in mind when styling the shelves, the craft has a lot of shelf real estate, so the solution is for large shelves (rather than stacking large shelves with many small ones).
