Creating an open living room and kitchen can be challenging. We have such a place in our rental Little Lake House. While an open floor plan can be a great entertaining space, it can also be challenging to design in a practical and interesting way. Here are a few tricks I used to decorate the living room and outdoor kitchen at Little Lake House, and I hope they help you decorate your space too!

One of the keys to designing an open space is to ensure visual harmony throughout. Start by choosing a primary color that will flow seamlessly between the kitchen and living room. Neutral colors such as soft grey, warm beige or soothing white work wonders to create a calming backdrop. Then add pops of color with accessories like pillows, rugs or wall art to add personality and charm to the space. Remember that balance is key: aim for a palette that complements rather than competes.

At the Little Lake House, I decided to paint the walls a soft white with gray undertones (Behr Silky White) and bring deep blues and warm yellows into the space through the cabinets, throw pillows, blankets, and furniture. With an open concept design, traffic flow must be taken into account to maintain functionality and maximize space. Avoid cluttering hallways with large furniture or decorations that impede movement. Choose a harmonious furniture arrangement that allows for easy movement between the kitchen and living room. Additionally, strategically placing rugs can help define areas and lead the eye smoothly from one area to another.

For Little Lake House, I wanted to make sure there was a wide walkway running through the middle of the house leading to the back door to the patio overlooking the lake. I also used a rug to set up the large sofa in the living room and made sure it was wide enough to fit around the sectional and around the dining table. Typically at least 36 inches wide is a good width for a comfortable runner.

Texture is the secret ingredient that can take your outdoor space from bland to dramatic. I believe this is an element that is often overlooked when people feel like their space doesn’t feel “creative”. Incorporate a variety of textures such as rugs, plush blankets, sleek metal pieces and natural elements such as wood or woven accents. Mix and match decor to create visual interest and depth, making the space inviting and vibrant. Consider adding richly textured elements, such as a statement wall adorned with textured wallpaper or a framed photo gallery, to add excitement. I recommend repeating textures throughout the open kitchen and living room to tie it together.

Get creative with what you add to these baskets! I love sisal or wicker for its texture, wood for its sleekness, metallic accents for its shine, pillows for its feathers, and blankets for its soft fabrics.

The table in the open plan kitchen serves as both a kitchen island and a dining area.

In multifunctional spaces such as kitchens and living rooms, efficiency in furniture selection is important. Look for pieces that serve two purposes, such as a coffee table with built-in storage or a sofa that can accommodate overnight guests. This not only increases space, but also increases the practicality of your design. Additionally, modular furniture offers flexibility, allowing you to change your plans to suit different occasions or events.
