The current mood in Indian wear is to recycle existing items in your closet and mix them with something new. However, it is important to adhere to the dress code and the specific atmosphere that the couple sets.

Mehta also offers versatile and comfortable clothing as most Indian celebrations involve a lot of dancing and drinking. The designer adds, “You’re never overdressed at an Indian wedding, so don’t be afraid to go all out with your ensembles, jewelry and makeup! Most guests show up in colorful outfits, but choose a palette that works for you.”

The brocade skirt is easy to wear with an interesting top or a patterned jacket with skinny pants. However, Malhotra recommends a traditional Indian woven or silk dress for the main wedding day as a nod to the culture.

While formal wear is acceptable for an engagement party, cocktail party or reception, stick to a traditional or fusion Indian look for other events. For example, a mehendi (henna party) calls for more playful and colorful pieces, while a sangeet (a dance-focused event) allows for formal Indian wear (jewel tones and metallics are never a bad idea). Indians also usually wear red or pink for the main wedding ceremony, so avoid these colors to avoid clashing with the bride.
