Bathroom Design Architecture – During one of the pre-design meetings with our client Cat Hill, she mentioned that she wanted a home that was “simple and comfortable, yet elegant with a dramatic ‘wow’.”
Our main goal for designing our Cat Hill project is to create a home that our client will be proud to live in with some of these special “magical moments” that make it home. One of these “wows” is a beautiful freestanding tub located in a floor-to-ceiling glass bath “enclosure” with ridge views and views of the Catskill Mountains. It sure looks magical to me!

I think there are two types of bathroom (design) people. There are those who believe that the most efficient use of space is best for a bathroom, no matter what it is. Then there are those who would like to spend hours in the bathroom, relaxing and having fun, and therefore want it to be one of the most special spaces in the house: spacious and luxurious. The fun part is, I think we have every single one of these people as a client… on most projects!

The images we’ve chosen to include below are not only luxurious and overly spacious (we couldn’t help ourselves), but we’ve also selected modern master bathroom designs that are well-appointed AND elegantly designed. Our goal is to design for both: open and luxurious, yet smart and efficient. Open space in the bathroom is good! If we design “efficient” spaces to be more efficient, then we have a little more room for “luxuries” in open spaces… (From a previous post on July 16, 2015) When you fantasize about your dream modern bathroom. , what comes to mind? Can it change the view of the medicine cabinet in a panorama of Los Angeles? Changing a sink bracket for your own private bathroom? Or lie in a deep soaking tub set against swirling marble walls? Great features like these can transform an ordinary, utilitarian bathroom into an ultra-special space you’ll never want to leave.
We have great news for you. Sometimes it just takes a few additions to get the look. “Modern design is practical and can seamlessly incorporate a classic bathroom with modern taps and joinery to create a more eclectic look, or even the shape of a tile can add a modern touch,” says London-based designer Kelly Hoppen, whose bathroom designs from luxury would make Kendall Roy envious. Hoppen advises bathroom renovators to focus on clean lines and all the little details.
“Lighting plays a crucial role and should be as hidden as possible,” he explains. “Avoid overusing patterns or shadows as this can detract from the sleek and modern look. The goal is to keep simplicity and elegance throughout the design.”

Magic Moments: Modern Bathroom Design Inspiration

A night at this Kelly Behun-designed retreat means soaking in a custom metal tub next to a luxurious vintage tapestry by Claude Bleynie. Our favorite detail? The idiosyncratic Janny Baek glass vase brings a touch of sculptural rarity to the otherwise opulent space.
Grace Jones is a dignified companion during her bathroom break in Eric Egan’s 1890s Milan apartment. The bold blue and yellow portrait goes well with the room’s Fromental wallpaper. We particularly admire Egan’s confident combination of wallpaper motifs and Moroccan tiles, a combination that creates a delicious tension.
The case could always be made for a moment of bold, monochromatic color that refuses to go unnoticed. In his French apartment, Rinck owner and president Valentin Goux covered the spacious master bathroom in blue Yves Klein tiles, a satisfying juxtaposition between the apartment’s warmer tones. “The colors become cooler in the private areas of the apartment,” says Goux. “It’s a little quieter, but still colorful and reminds us of the bathrooms we had as kids.”

Marble has been used in home interiors for millennia, and if it’s good enough for Rome’s finest architects, it’s good enough for Kelly Wearstler, who clad the walls of this Toronto bathroom in elegant Calacatta viola marble.
