Bathroom Tile Ideas With Bathtub – How to tile a shower and master bathroom floor is not a blog post I set out to write?
But, now that it’s all done, I’m a happy girl. Fortunately I don’t make all the decisions. 😉 #myhusbandrocks
Bathroom Tile Ideas With Bathtub
Our original plan for our master bathroom was to order a 6′ tub/shower, use LVT (luxury vinyl tile) flooring, and renovate the vanity into a bathroom vanity with a vessel sink. This is how some of the plans came to fruition. ha!
15 Inspiring Bathroom Tile Ideas For A Stunning Makeover
It is a difficult concept for me to grasp the first 200 times there is a delay or a problem or a “problem.” 😉
Well, now I’m going to let my handsome husband walk you through the process of how to tile your shower. Cheers to the home project!
First of all, it can be quite labor-intensive and you should give yourself plenty of time to tile your bathroom. Be patient with yourself and your wife (or your husband).
The photo above is the only “before” photo we have of the pin. We used 1/2 inch cement board for the shower surround and ceiling.

Scrape the coating off walls and shelves with mortar. Be sure to scoop the coat all the way into the tub. We also put tape, plastic and cardboard on the tub to protect it from damage. The mortar was everywhere and very heavy. It can scratch your tub, so be careful!
I used a laser level to keep everything level and centered. The laser rotates (see image below) so you can see the lines on all three walls. This will help you get and keep all the tiles on the same line and where they meet at the corners.
We decided to make the shelves ourselves. When the studs are exposed, it is 2 × 4 material and then covered with cement board and a coat of plaster. We chose the shelf height at random, which is not smart, without taking any measurements other than to feel comfortable standing in the shower.
Technically, if you are 6’1″ the height of the shelf is perfect, but for Sam who is 5’3″ it is a bit high. However, she will be the first to tell you that they are incredibly easy to clean because there is no water or soap residue touching them.

So in the end, we decided that it was actually a good thing that she wasn’t there while my friend and I worked out this little detail. You’ll also see that it works really well because the top edge of the shelf lines up with the tile line.
If you also want to buy this tile, here is a picture of our galvanized charcoal tile from Lowe’s. We used a nice large tile on the wall, 12″ x 24″.
For large, heavy tiles you will need mortar (of course mortars vary). This will ensure that your heavy-duty tiles adhere to the wall properly and stay where you put them.
Finally, you can see the laser rod used here. This tool is super useful when building a house, let me tell you! Make sure your first row starts as straight as possible, filling in gaps and uneven spots or imperfections in the tub. Our tub is new and installed very well, so we have very few imperfections to deal with, but we need to place a few tiles to achieve a straight line on the first row.

Spelling is very important. You want the same slices on both sides. So you have to do some math. When you do this, don’t forget to include the size of the spacer, we used 1/4 inch.
There is some time to consider here. You don’t want to mix it so much that it’s hard when you get to the bottom of the barrel. I used a 1/4 inch trowel to apply the grout to the walls and tiles.
Above is the 1/4 inch spacer we used. We use this size to fit the larger tiles, although you can use any size.
Make sure to use a tile saw that is suitable for the tiles you are cutting. The saw was almost too small, but we made it work. Be patient when cutting tiles, do not force it, and if it’s cutting slowly, just let it do its thing or change the blade. If you rush it and damage the edges, you will regret it. It’s always fun. No!

This is a handy little kit that sticks to the tiles and guides the drill bit in one place.
Make sure your tiles are intact and dry before you try to attach the mug. Fill the cup with water and dig a hole!
Measure where the hole should be. I place the cup on the front or finished side of the tile to ensure that the finished side does not peel or chip.
We decided to cut some tiles and drill holes in some for valves and nozzles.

We chose Pearl Gray Mortar from Lowes. Remember to grout only between the tiles, not the area between the ceiling and the tiles or between the tub and the tiles. You’ll want to treat these areas with the same color caulk as the grout (pearl gray) because you don’t want the grout to crack over time. This ready-made grout caulk tube expands to look like the mix-your-own grout bag pictured above.
Once all the grout has dried, be sure to seal the grout with a grout sealer. Sam made two coats. We then assembled the trim onto the valve and called it good! We ordered our Delta fixtures, diverters and rain shower heads from Amazon and we are very happy with them.
