Bed Background Design Ideas – You spend a third of your life in bed, so it is quite appropriate that – apart from the highest quality mattress and luxurious bedding – your rooms should be aesthetically at a high level. An easy, not to mention trendy, way to take your bedroom to the next level is with chic wallpaper. Not only do the right bedroom wallpapers brighten up your space, but they also have the magical ability – depending on your decorating goals – to make your room feel cozy or spacious and emphasize or detract from features. “Wallpaper provides a real opportunity to make the walls and ceiling the main feature in a room,” insists ELLE DECOR A-List designer Danielle Colding. “Textured papers—like my favorite grass cloth—can also provide a more dynamic background that adds a new dimension and layer.”
The possibilities for a bedroom with wallpaper are endless, as evidenced by the homes featured in ELLE DECOR. You can cover your bedroom from floor to ceiling with stylish wall coverings, as Lorenzo Castillo did in a Parisian pied-à-terre, or apply them to one wall as an extension of the surrounding space of your headboard, as Nickey Kehoe once did in a cool California home. And with an endless variety of stick-on and peel-off options, adding color and pattern to your bedroom walls has never been easier. But where to start? “The main consideration is the feel you want in the space and your own style preferences,” advises Colding. “For a more modern, minimalist space, I’d rely on texture – grass cloth, plaster or cork are ideal for these spaces. If you want a more traditional or transitional space, layered ones work well pattern.” An all-over floor-to-ceiling floral or striped look can encourage a cozy, wonderful atmosphere, but you don’t have to go all out; a metal treatment or a beautiful hand-painted panel can look good on a wall, says Colding.

When choosing a pattern, consider your vibe again. Do you want your walls to blend seamlessly with your existing decor or make a bold style statement? “Small swatches can be read as an all-over color and layered without downloading. Bolder, graphic patterns or beautiful panels become the focus of the space and allow other aspects of the design to be quieter,” says Colding, whose brands include grasscloths from Twenty2 and Holly Hunt; de Gournay and Fromental’s statement styles; and the patterns of Pierre Frey, John Rosselli and Schumacher. As for his number one rule? “The most important thing is to have a balance. Not everyone can be the star of the show.”

With these tips in mind, we’ve searched our archives to discover some of our favorite bedroom wallpaper ideas, whether you want to keep it classic, get messy or try something new. One thing is for sure: with the right pattern, where you catch a few z’s will never catch a case of blah.
Ditch the tired baby blues and pinks that dull so many kids’ rooms in favor of fresh, jungle-like wallpaper, as Lauren Buxbaum Gordon of Nate Berkus Associates did in this fun room. In this case, the wallpaper is Brunschwig & Fils’ Bird and Thistle pattern, a print that reminds the designer of Gucci designs of the time. “It was a lot of fun putting the color scheme and wallpaper together for this room,” she told us. “There was something very good about mixing a more traditional paper with colors that don’t naturally go together, but for us it felt like a ‘runway’.”
Walls? Lori Deeds of Celerie Kemble Interiors did just that in this luxurious Palm Beach mansion. Classic
Brunschwig & Fils’ pattern, Les Touches, brings a bit of animal print glam but is subtle enough not to veer into unattractive territory.

“More is more” is the attitude in this Manhattan apartment designed by Patrick Mele, so it’s no surprise that look-me wallpapers are installed with maximalist aplomb. The client wanted her bedroom to be reminiscent of a garden, so Mele chose Jennifer Shorto’s mural-like woodland print to serve as a romantic backdrop to the bed.
ELLE DECOR Style Director Parker Bowie Larson hasn’t met a wallpaper he didn’t like. And because the guest room in her Long Island home looked out onto the forest, she incorporated the plants into the leaf-print bedding and wallpaper, called Palm Leaves, Cole & Son. Bonus: the bold pattern helps accentuate the airy sloping ceilings.
If you don’t like the idea of a full pattern, consider displaying a pictorial version on one wall. Here, in the master closet of a colorful Manhattan home, designer Danielle Colding supports a black cabinet with a rich Fromental view. Not only does it work as a piece of art, but it will save you the work (and expense) of papering the entire space.
In an 18th-century house, vintage prints and patterns get a modern update, thanks to designer Heidi Caillier. The patterns are all over the place, but their comparable size and muted rust tones work together. In this case, Lisa Fine wallpaper emphasizes the comfortable century-old ceilings.

Window glass is a trademark of chic menswear, and it looks great in the bedroom too. Here, in an unusually neutral interior designed by Redd Kaihoi, a Miles Redd for Schumacher print covers the walls, shades and canopy. Talk about a haberdashery hack!
One of the many benefits of wallpaper is its ability to make a small space magical. This perfect sleeping spot was given the fairytale treatment thanks to designer Frances Merrill, who lined the sloping walls and ceiling with floral wall coverings by Pierre Frey.
If you want an all-over pattern, try a step that’s a little easier on your eyes: change the pattern’s foreground and background colors. The transition works beautifully in this Parisian bedroom designed by Eric Allart, where the bedding, headboard and curtains are hand-embossed by Simrana.
Wallpaper doesn’t always have to be formal. Get this classy animal-themed print from Bien Fait in a Hamptons home designed by Alec Holland. “I’m totally obsessed with this wallpaper – I’d love to use it in an adult space next,” the designer told us.

Wallpaper is not common in Italy, but the owners of an apartment in Rome (perfectly located above the Colosseum) asked design duo Alivisi Kirimoto to use it throughout the house. Selected floral wall coverings, designed by Romo, appear in three different versions throughout the house, including this pale variant in the bedroom. Delicate flowers communicate with the trees and plants in front of the window.
ELLE DECOR A-Lister Martyn Lawrence Bullard may be known for his lavish pattern play, but on this Hawaiian getaway, he decided to let the lush tropical surroundings do the heavy lifting. Instead of a wall covering that looked at me, he chose an organic bark-textured material from Caba Company to draw the room.
