The images in this post show some of the different master bedroom designs we’ve offered to some of our clients recently. Some of them have been built, some will be built soon. They range from a modest 192 square feet to a luxurious 384 square feet. You can go smaller or larger, but this represents a good range.

A medium-sized bedroom with windows above the bed and a credenza in front of the bed. The bedroom door in this particular design will use hidden hinges so that the door “disappears” into the accent wall on the left.

For the design of all other spaces in the home, the conventions of space and ergonomics also apply but are not specific. For example, to design a thoughtful bedroom, a designer must study general space allowances and human factors and then apply them to create a space that marries function and form. .
During my long tenure as a custom home designer, sadly, I have completed and reviewed floor plans where very little attention was paid to bedroom design. Instead of taking the time to carefully and thoughtfully create layouts that make sense and allow for the best practical use of space, floor bedroom plans seem like an afterthought.

For this post, I’m sharing eleven sure-fire design tips that, if followed, will make all the difference in the success of a bedroom floor plan design.
Below you will see that I have included a before and after floor plan for the guest bedroom design in the Water Vista Project, a 1990’s entire house remodeling project located in Northern California. Spatial benefits Clear wall space will provide an opportunity to center a dresser or chest in front of the bed, creating a good visual connection between the two and a strong focal point. This configuration creates more opportunities to add case materials to increase storage. It also establishes visual order and will make the space feel cleaner.
Space Planning Tip Typically, the closet door is located on the wall directly opposite the bed.
Spatial benefits in that it doesn’t disrupt or block the entire space and eat up spaces that are better served with pieces of furniture.
What Makes A Split Bedroom Floor Plan Ideal?
Covering a window with a headboard is never a good idea, but that doesn’t mean the bed shouldn’t go against the window wall. As long as the window is located on either side of the bed, or high enough off the floor that the headboard can easily clear it.
Spatial benefits Placing a bed against a window wall can create a beautiful feature and provide more free space in the room that can be used for storage.

Spatial benefits in that the door swing does not block or take up valuable floor space that could be used for furniture.

Spatial advantage will help ensure the best possible layout by adjusting the closet design to where it works best in the space, rather than around it. When considering the location of a closet in a room, consider its shape, the location of the closet door(s), the type of closet door, and whether the closet doors lead into the room. The closet will help guide the layout.
