But that didn’t stop his dream of a big party. As his mom, it’s my duty to make sure he has a great birthday even when he thought it was the day after Christmas. And since their cousin was born on the same day, just 2 hours apart, they can share their partner. This year both girls had a DIY unicorn party.

The funny thing about the unicorn party is that they both independently told their moms that they wanted a unicorn party. As far as we know, neither of them had talked about their desire to have a unicorn party together. You can tell they are just cousins.

So of course it was my job to make this little party work. I love decorating and making each of my children’s birthdays special. But when it comes to my daughter, sometimes I go a little further. I think a lot of that is because it’s Christmas time. I don’t want him to feel like he never had a great birthday because everyone associated it with Christmas. However, I also don’t want to put too much pressure on myself during the holidays. So I try to plan ahead and use Amazon to help me get the job done.
Let me walk you through the steps and supplies I used to make this dream of a little DIY unicorn party a reality.
I started by deciding on a unicorn cake for the party. There are many great options and ideas out there. I pinned many to my party board on Pinterest (go check them out). But since this party was the day after Christmas, I wanted something simple that I could make in a few hours the morning of the party.
I decided on an open cake. This way I didn’t have to frost the entire cake, but still had fun colors that made the cake look like a unicorn. I mixed two boxed cake mixes and divided them into 3 separate bowls. I used Wilton Icing Colors to mix green, pink and yellow cake batter. I baked these cakes about a week before the party and did not freeze them.

The morning of the party I took the cakes out of the freezer and used a serrated knife to cut the edge of each cake. This removed the brown edges and revealed the pretty colors of the cake. Then I made icing in blue, pink and purple. She put them in drops inside a frozen bag and made roses for the unicorn’s mane. Last time I added an adorable unicorn and eyes cake topper that I found on Amazon. The whole process took maybe an hour and was worth it. Both girls loved their cake.
The cake topper also came with cupcake liners. Among them were the wrappers and the horns to go on the cupcakes. I took both because I also made unicorn cupcakes for my daughter’s class to celebrate her birthday. They are wonderful rolls and some children didn’t want to eat them because they were so pretty.
For the DIY unicorn party decorations, I wanted to keep it simple, but it also looks like it took a lot of work. I created a rosette file in the Cricut Designs space that I could cut out using 8.5 x 11″ pastel cardstock. You could certainly use 12 x 12 cardstock, but I wanted specific colors and couldn’t find them in just the 8.5 x 11.
Next, I cut out the unicorns and scalloped circles out of this beautiful Glitter Paper. I hot glued all the pieces together and put ribbon on the back so I could hang them on the wall. For my DIY unicorn party backdrop, I grabbed a $4 store tablecloth in blue, pink, yellow, and purple. I leaned them against the wall and cut from the bottom up about 3/4 of the way every 2 inches or so. Then I braid them on top. This allows all the colors to pass through the background. You don’t want any colors to be left out.
I hung Martha Stewart confetti balloons that I found this summer at the Cricut Mountain crafting marathon on top and hung gold ribbon in swirls just to add a little pop. Finally, I hung the unicorn roses I had made and they turned out very colorful and pretty. It was a nice change from all the Christmas decorations around him.
Finally, my sister-in-law gave the girls these adorable Unicorn Balloons. They completed the background perfectly. One for each of the girls as well as all their fun party favors. In the end, I am very happy with the final design and how easy it was to put together.
Some other things I thought about but didn’t do due to lack of time. I thought about making some fun iron-on vinyl napkins with unicorns or rainbows. It would be a fun addition. I also found some fun unicorn games on Pinterest, but with the holidays we weren’t ready for games anymore. However, the girls loved the DIY unicorn party, which means it was a hit. As a birthday party coordinator at the Children’s Museum, nothing makes me happier than seeing a child’s face light up when they walk into the decorated birthday party room. Decoration and theme play an important role in making the day special and memorable for the child. Although we are all socially distanced and quarantined, it is still important to make a birthday special. Mermaid Birthday / Pool Party Ideas Diy
Use your gift bag or wrapping paper and cut a rectangle 20″ long and 5″ tall. Fold the strip in half with the printed sides together (your strip should now measure 10″x5″). Use your ruler to measure 2” down from the top and draw a straight line horizontally across the paper. Then take your scissors and cut a triangle shape from one side to the other (don’t cut past the line you drew!) to create the crown points. Open the strip again and lay it flat with the printed side facing up. If you want to add other decorations (glitter, pom poms, ribbon, etc.), do that first. When you finish decorating, join the ends together, creating a circle. Use your tape or stapler to connect the ends and your wreath is complete!
This is a simple DIY that adds pizzazz to the space where you are hosting the birthday party. You will need book thread and scissors.
Send advance requests to family and friends (or even your social media accounts if you’re comfortable with that) or postcards and letters to your birthday child. Kids love receiving something in the mail with their name on it and will have fun running to the mailbox every day to see what’s there for them.
This idea comes from the basics we used for the dinosaur-themed birthday party at the Children’s Museum. It’s a perfect DIY activity for kids participating in Zoom birthdays. Each one will look a little different and will be a keepsake to remember the birthday party. Start collecting toys, greenery, a jar, and play sand that will fill the jar. It will be important to let other parents know that you intend to do this simple DIY so they can prepare their materials.

Birthday games at home can be difficult if you don’t live with many people. This game is fun because you only need two people and the child or adult can easily take the lead so you can take turns.
Whether it’s cupcakes, brownies, cookies, or cakes, give the birthday person the control of decorating their own birthday dessert. This will take the pressure off the adult and serve as delightful “art time” for the child. It’s a win-win situation!
