Calligraphy Design Ideas Easy – Everyone loves beautiful calligraphy. It’s easy to see pretty letters and think it’s too hard, but actually fake calligraphy is surprisingly easy.
Everyone loves a great calligraphy. It’s almost as if the appreciation of this beautiful art is baked into our bones. Maybe it’s just a human thing. It’s easy to look at brush lettering and calligraphy and think it’s only for the artistic elite. Any ordinary person can pick up a pen and make wonderful hand lettering. The truth is, it’s not that hard to do. In fact, mastering the art of fake calligraphy is surprisingly easy.
Calligraphy Design Ideas Easy
Artificial calligraphy is basically the same as normal calligraphy, except you can do it without all the fancy nibs or brush pens. Any standard pen or pencil will work! This is what makes artificial calligraphy so attractive – it costs nothing to get started. You can practice with abandon using any old pen you have lying around. However, I would suggest investing in some simple grid paper to use as guidelines. Here, I’m using a Rhodia dot grid notepad. This is my go-to letter paper because the dotted grid allows for structure without getting in the way.

While any old ballpoint pen will work, I suggest grabbing a pen that doesn’t have a lot of sharp ink sticking to the page. Something that has fast drying ink is ideal, like Primacolor illustration markers or maybe a felt tip pen. You don’t want to smear your fake calligraphy everywhere!
First, write a word. I would recommend italics for consistency, but it’s certainly not a requirement. Leave plenty of space between each letter. Here, I’m using one of my Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, which are perfect for this technique!
Once it’s written, it’s time to put some weight on it! Using your pen, go over and thicken all the strokes. Not sure which strokes are down strokes? Hold the pen over your cheek and write the word in the air. Each time your pen moves down to the bottom of the page counts as a downstroke.
Making all strokes thick while leaving thin strokes on top creates a wonderful variation. This is the beautiful effect in brush lettering and other calligraphy styles. Adding weight to the lines mimics the effect, leaving a finished faux calligraphy result!

Here is another example, but with a slightly different technique. You can also go over and mark where you plan to create a thick line, leaving a blank letter outline. Then, just go through and fill in the blanks.
This variation is a great way to visualize the finished product. Bonus tip – you can even fill the letters with a different color, or just leave them blank.
Let’s try another one, but with a Crayola marker – and let’s do it in print! Like I said, I think it works best in italics, but it could still be nice in print.
As you can see, the artificial calligraphy technique is incredibly easy. Literally anyone can do it with almost any pen or pencil they want!
Step By Step 3d Calligraphy & Lettering (using Perspective)
You may be wondering how it compares to non-faux calligraphy. Here’s how it stacks up against a Tombow Dual Brush pen.
The top was created with the brush tip and the bottom was created with the pencil tip. Of course, it’s not quite the same. The brush tip is smoother, thicker and has a wonderful gradient in color. Artificial calligraphy does not look as clean compared to its pureblood counterpart. However, the appeal of faux calligraphy is how easy it is for anyone to do, so all levels in terms of pros/cons. Really, it’s completely up to you.
There are times when artificial calligraphy is a better choice for a project. For example, in my master grocery list, I use faux calligraphy for all the subheadings because they are too small for my big Tombow brushes. This can be especially true if you want to reinforce the letters in your bullet journal since the page is likely to be small. Basically, faux calligraphy styles are extremely useful and flexible!
Isn’t it a ton easier than you expected? Artificial calligraphy is a great starting point for anyone interested in hand lettering but not sure where to start. It is cheap, simple and relatively fast. And while it’s not a true replacement for the real thing, it’ll definitely do the job in a pinch and serve as great practice for more complex fonts down the road.
