Character Outfit Design Ideas – Hi, my name is Anayansi and today I’m going to give you a quick tutorial on effective fashion design and character costuming!
As artists, we all run into problems/shortcomings from time to time when it comes to the character creation process. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, effectively designing clothing for your original creations is an incredibly valuable skill to learn and use. Fashion design, which will also be referred to as a character’s costume in this guide, expresses a character’s personality, their motivation, and when properly considered, can serve as a great storytelling aid. While every individual is different, here are some universals that I’ve learned not only through study and research, but also through years of trial and error in my work.

By the end of this guide, you will have a concise but clear understanding of the importance of proper fashion design and how to use color theory to enhance your designs.

Fashion has existed in all societies since their inception and grows with each individual. Faith, politics, religion, location and local culture shape who wears what. That’s why it’s important to consider the following before you start designing the clothes your characters will wear:
By asking yourself these and similar questions, we can further begin to form a mental picture of the type of character we want to create. For the purposes of this guide, I will focus mainly on Western fashion trends, especially in the United States. But feel free to apply some of this to your own works and cultural trends where you see fit!
Planning ahead is important so that you know exactly what type of clothing to choose or design for the characteristics that are specific to our character. But before a person wears a piece of clothing, he must decide why he is wearing it, where he will wear it and how long he will wear it? An ensemble design for a character can also include hair, makeup, and accessories.
But first we have to decide for whom we will make clothes. Let’s go back to the previous part, what is your character? Take my original character Lydia for example:

Lydia is a 20-something who loves bright colors and isn’t afraid to use body-enhancing clothes to her advantage. She is stereotypically feminine and likes to subvert expectations where she sees fit, especially when it comes to fashion standards. She often accessorizes it with bold, statement pieces, such as stunning shoes or a chunky necklace. Her style is sultry yet elegant and she likes to mix the old with the new!
I recently visited the mall to take photos specifically for this tutorial to show real examples of how to mix and match outfits to create new looks for your character.
The steps will help you determine how the clothes cover our figure. Crocs can also help us determine ways we can render a fabric or allow us to see how certain pieces might look before making a final decision in the design process.
Since Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, I decided to draw Lydia in an outfit that is both cute and flirty, maybe for a formal evening or dinner. I will focus on how color can also affect the mood of the clothes and how it is related to the figure.

Color theory can seem intimidating at first, but the more you experiment and discover which colors work together, the more creative you’ll be in the clothes you design. Let’s look at the color wheel:
A hue is an actual color that we can physically see, and there are twelve shades on the basic color wheel. All other known colors can be described as derivatives of these twelve shades.
The value (Light and Dark) describes whether the color is muted or light and can be changed by adding white or black.

Next, we’ll start talking about color schemes, which can be useful if you’re trying to create a harmonious color palette for your character’s clothing.
There are no hard and fast rules for a “good” color palette, but anything that works in combination with your character’s personality, preferences and the function of the clothing will do wonders.
Sometimes I try different color schemes if I don’t find inspiration in palettes I’ve built or found, but if you’re just starting out and struggling, try one of the seven common color schemes below
1.) Analogous – two or more colors that are next to each other on the color wheel; ie: red-orange, yellow-orange, orange or yellow-green, green and blue-green

2.) Complementary – the colors are opposite each other on the color wheel; ie: purple and yellow, green and red, red-orange and blue-green, etc.
3.) Split-Complementary – Primary base with two colors split between complementary, i.e.: red, yellow-green and blue-green
4.) Triadic – Colors are chosen based on an even triangular spacing on the color wheel, i.e.: red, yellow, blue or green, purple, orange
5.) Rectangular – Colors are selected based on the rectangular shape on the color wheel, i.e.: blue-violet, red-violet, yellow-orange, yellow-green

6.) Monochrome – any single color is selected and mixed with white and black to achieve different levels of saturation
7.) Square – All four points are evenly distributed on the color wheel, i.e.: purple, blue-green, yellow, red-orange
It’s fine to keep the aesthetic of the clothing you’re designing in mind, but if it disrupts your character’s pre-set story or personality, you’ll need to explain the choices you’ve made to your audience.
(ie a character who normally wears dull, muted colors will start wearing bright pastel colors to catch the attention of someone she likes.)
Fashioning Your Fantasy Character By Nonnoe
I start by drawing a sketch of Lydia. If you have trouble drawing free sketches, you can use a 3D model from the 3D Asset Clip Studio Paint library. If the library doesn’t have the assets you want, try searching the Clip Studio Asset Store for some that suit your needs.
When I make variations, I duplicate the sketches and place them evenly on the same canvas. With each croquis, a certain element of the clothing changes, be it color, style or fabric.
The outfit usually includes a top, bottom and shoes, but make changes as needed. Since my story revolves around characters who live in the real world, I look for something that someone might see on the street.
I’ve already mentioned how color can be used to influence an entire outfit and be used to dictate the mood of a character. Since Lydia is flirtatious, I decided to use warm, slightly muted colors to push the story even further. Although she usually wears lighter colors, using loud and garish colors would make her outfit feel childish and rather tacky for the occasion, which is the opposite of the mood I’m going for.

Once I have the outfit sketches, I then color them, making sure to only use each color once or twice throughout the outfit. Referring to the previous segment on color theory, I make sure that the color palettes are harmonious for each outfit and I try not to go with more than five colors at once so that it doesn’t look too busy. Since this outfit is Valentine’s themed, it uses a lot of red-based shades and colors with a red undertone.
For my needs, I decided that a medium outfit would best suit my needs for a romantic Valentine’s dinner. The fluffy coat helps keep Lidia warm and look stylish at the same time. A black dress is flirty, but at the same time tasteful. Assuming she’s on a date, open heels are a fitting finish. She’s wearing a dark brown beaded necklace, although it’s not a statement piece, it’s nice since I don’t want her competing for attention with the coat. If an extra layer was needed for warmth, Lydia could wear dark socks with the set.

Remember, apply this knowledge to your art where it suits you. Maybe you’re great at designing clothes but need a better understanding of color theory, try mixing and matching color schemes to find palettes that help you create a fuller character, or if you’re playing it safe, experiment with bold color choices!
