I was able to fit everything in my truck, minus the couch, to drive to his apartment for a one-day living room makeover. I have to say, I was pretty impressed with how everything fit in the truck. And at the end of the day, here is the living room that I revealed to my brother.

You also don’t want to block any of the natural light from the window. To maximize sunlight, the curtain panels hang just over the window edge. This will also make it look like you have a larger window.

With only a little space to work with, I knew my brother needed extra storage and a place to put his keys when he walked in the front door. I found this entertainment cabinet on Amazon for a great price and painted it black to match the overall design of the room.

Not only does it offer plenty of storage inside and on top of the cabinet, but it’s the perfect size for this small space. I knew the kitchen island/table space would fit this area, I couldn’t make anything too big. By going with this smaller closet, the spaces don’t overlap and function as their own spaces. For example, I didn’t want the stools in front of the closet to slide out every time someone sits down.

Remember how my brother wanted a cow print rug? Instead of making it the only thing in the room, I decided to layer it on top of an 8 x 10 rug. By doing this, it helps define the space, adds a coziness factor and adds texture to the overall design of the living room. I honestly think the hood makes the room and can’t imagine it without it. And a small detail on the 8 x 10 rug, it’s a burlap

Cotton blanket. This is what creates the subtle pattern on it, making it a softer jute rug and one that is not as stiff.

An important thing to keep in mind when designing the room is the size of the furniture and the size of the room it goes in. Even with this small living room, my design includes a sofa bed and two side chairs. I was anxious to see how it would all fit and flow, but it was all perfect.

Since the sofa was the largest piece of furniture, I knew the chairs had to be smaller and not bulky. These two side chairs help ground the room with the black leather and still allow your eyes to wander around the room because there are no cushions. In other words, under and along the arms is open space.

Giving a space a personal touch is really what makes it your own. For my brother, he is studying to be a sommelier (a trained wine professional) and found ways to incorporate that into the design.

So is the artwork in the frames on the wall of wine barrels. They are really beautiful and add to the masculine look of the room. The book on the coffee table is one by Phillips about wine, so I made sure to include that as well. You’ll also notice the decanter and whiskey glasses on the entertainment cabinet. And finally, the cross-neck was the first thing he said he wanted in the room.
