Depending on the design you like, here’s what you’ll need to make all of the cards in this article:
Step 1 – Cut the cardboard to the size of the desired Christmas card. A smaller card is better because it doesn’t make the thumb too thin and keeps the comparison in place.
Step 2 – Dip your fingers (or your child’s fingers) into the paint and press onto the paper. The shape of your wrist will depend on the pattern you make. Use pink or gold for the deer head, gold with a green and red Christmas elf card. Use multi-colored paint on the light card. Set aside and let dry.
Step 4 – Using a pencil or black pencil, add details such as the deer’s face and face, elf hat, shoes, etc.

I have added in this article a model of hanging balls on which there is no thumb. I drew a circle with a cookie cutter, cut it out and asked the kids to shape it however they wanted. You can easily have your kids draw them by hand, which is why I included them in this article. I then placed the circle on the colored card and used a glitter pen to draw the ribbon. You can also use real ribbon in different sizes to make the same pattern.

TIP: Once you’ve made your hands, prepare some paper for your little one to freehand draw on so you can transfer the cards to dry, stress-free!

I made this craft with a large group of children in a toddler group I led, so I wanted to make sure it was as easy as possible for the little ones to do it independently (or at least with a little guidance). The beauty of it is that as long as you have pretty nails, they will look great no matter what!
I have tried many different methods over the years to get the best paint for the thumb (especially from a small, quiet child!) and I find the best way is to paint the hand with a brush (we recently did some inches you can see in our zoo creations
We tried putting paint on the plate and the child would get their hand on it, but it usually ends up with having too much paint on your hand and you lose all the detail. I use plates but somewhere to put my paint and wash my brush!
Once you have painted your child’s hand (make sure there is enough paint on the hand but not so much that it squishes everywhere!), press firmly and hold for a few seconds. Remove the paper keeping your arm straight and straight if possible (this is ideal, not real!!)
Make, Take, And Give
When I made this DIY, we didn’t have time to wait for the paint to dry before adding everything – maybe easier if you can, but it’s possible! (It doesn’t take long to dry and can be helped with a hairdryer if you want to do it in one session!)
While the paint is still wet, this is the time to add any glitter you want (make sure the lid is closed – we had a tiny deer inside)
Adding decorations will bring your deer to life and really make it look like a deer!
BEST TIP – Do this on a piece of card that you can attach to the tag or Christmas card you’re making – this saves you having to throw away a lot of cards if something goes wrong.)
Make An Easy Easter Card And Treat Containers To Match.
An alternative to handprints, this Christmas tree is a great activity to try with the little ones! You can do the same with the deer by drawing your child’s finger and clicking on the card (they will need guidance for this – you can draw little dots to give them an idea)
Add more glitter, remove excess and add a pink finger to create a Christmas tree.
At the top we added a foam star but you can use any kitchen or paint on the wood (just be careful not to mix too much green!)
