Project: Fairmilehead Parish Church, Edinburgh, Scotland — Sonia Nicolson

1. Start by drawing three straight lines, as if you were drawing an unfinished square. This is the front part of the church. Then draw an inverted “V” line on top of the structure to create the roof. Next, draw another “V” shaped line similar to the first. Connect with short, straight lines.

2. Draw the staircase of the church. Draw three narrow squares at the base of the house, each slightly longer than the one at the top.

3. Draw three straight, vertical lines at the top of the steps. The middle line should be higher than the others. This will form the doors of the church. Connect the top lines in an inverted “V” shape. Draw another “V” shaped line above the first and connect it with short, straight lines. Draw two small circles in the center of the center line to represent the door handles.

4. Draw the windows in the church. Enter two narrow shapes with a curved line for the top and sides and a straight line for the bottom. Then draw one straight vertical line and several straight horizontal lines inside each to mark the disks.

6. Draw a window on the church tower, again using a curved line and a straight line. Draw slices with vertical and horizontal lines. Draw a cross on it and outline a shape like a small “t.”

7. Make the house bigger. Using straight lines, draw a square shape on one side. Draw a straight line parallel to the ground to mark the base. On top of the rectangle, draw the roof by adding a half trapezoid.

8. Raise the house to the other side. Again, use straight lines to enclose the square. Draw a straight line horizontally to the base. Then complete the trapezoid that represents the roof.

9. Use curved lines to wrap narrow windows around the sides of the house. At each corner of the roof, draw a cross, similar to the letter “t”.

A church is a building used for religious services, usually owned by a Christian community. Many traditional churches are shaped like a cross.

As you can see from this drawing guide, there are many parts of the church that appear in different directions, creating a four-dimensional shape.

Another feature of many churches is the nave, a tower with a pinnacle or pyramid on top. The towers of today’s churches harken back to ancient fertility cults, where towers and pillars were used.

In the third century AD, a cross was placed at the top of an Egyptian obelisk, “combining the two traditions” and becoming the first pillar of the modern Roman Catholic Church.

The word “church” comes from a Greek word meaning “of the Lord or of the Lord.” Churches can be large or small, modest or spacious.

The first church was known as a “house church” or “house church” – a private home used for worship.

The word “church” is sometimes extended to include the community of believers, not just the house where they worship.
