Of course, the decoration of the classroom is not the MOST important thing. But we want to walk into the classroom knowing that we’ve taken the time to prepare our students for when they arrive. We want students to know they are entering a positive space where they can build trust, build relationships, and learn content. A positive classroom environment helps students experience this. So how do we build it?
You want your walls and classrooms to be uncluttered. The cleaner your decorating style is, the more room you’ll have for other accessories in your classroom.
Your students will thrive in a clean, organized and attractive space. You still love the pictures and ornaments your students gave you two years ago, but it may be time to retire them. Throw away the old furniture that is no longer useful in your room. Find a place to stack boxes in the corner. Functional decorations like bubble shelves and fabric storage cubes are great for hiding books, supplies, and extra materials.
How to hide boxes/stacks of books: I was a classroom teacher at school and always had extra classroom textbooks in my room. My class was tiny! I hid all the boxes under the computer desk and hung a cloth to act as a “tablecloth” to hide the mess. It was a great way to de-clutter the classroom!

There will be all kinds of students in your classroom, including those who are easily distracted or overwhelmed by an overly stimulating class. You can create a colorful and fun space while keeping it simple. Avoid busy styles, hard-to-read fonts, and clashing colors. And you don’t need decorations and posters on every inch of your room. Leaving empty wall space in the room is a good idea and will benefit your students.
Think about how you work best. For me, I need a quiet environment for lesson planning or assessment. Your students may thrive in a quiet classroom environment, too! Add soothing lights to your classroom that you can turn on when the lights are off. This ‘enlightened’ atmosphere helps students focus during independent activities. Create a cozy and relaxing space with throw pillows and cozy rugs for students, and add accents throughout the room.
You can put artificial trees in the corner of your room to give it that “outdoor” feel.

The purpose of anchor charts is to support students in their current learning. By showing them on the first day of class, I lost their value. Anchor graphics blend in with our other decorations. It’s okay to start the school year with a blank slate.
1) They are easy to prepare at home. To make this easier, I recommend getting a personal laminator. This is my favorite.

Astrobright paper is great because it’s an easy way to add color to your screen without spending a lot of money. Use it to frame student paper or create bold letters, among other things. You can save on color ink by printing with black ink on colored paper!
Organizing the best classrooms. Consider getting a trash can to keep your library and supplies organized. You can get colorful trash cans or baskets that match the theme of your classroom. Print colorful labels to help students know where the supplies are. Trash cans are a great way to hide clutter and give your classroom a cohesive look.
