Collage projects are my favorite art project with my kids because they are quick and require little prep, but create beautiful finished pieces and teach great composition skills! So instead of throwing away old magazines, save their brightly printed pages for use in magazine collage crafts you can make with your kids!

Your First Magazine Collage Art Project with Kids When I introduced magazine collages to my kids, they instinctively cut out the images they liked.

They often cut animals, people or shapes. Their interpretation of collage was very literal; For them, collage meant cutting out what you like and attaching selected images side by side, without overlapping.

My experience has been that my kids don’t like to overlap, cover, or change found photos. An example of this type of collage is shown below.

I think this project was the most successful because I made my own collages at the same time as my kids and modeled unexpected ways to overlap or combine elements than they would have thought of on their own. With some suggestions and encouragement, my son’s imagination exploded into his first collage at age 7. I especially like that he added sunglasses to the moon and blue face! He used magazine clippings, our family’s faces (printed on my computer printer) and a Sharpie to add hand-drawn elements. Even cut some of his favorite things: a snake and an apple!

I especially like him drawing bodies and weapons for his people. Plus, some of his favorite things, an apple and a snake make it into the artwork!

In this mixed media collage, the bird’s eggs are cut from magazines, and the branches and branches of the nest are cut from brown construction paper. The background is created using watercolor dry brush technique.

Be creative! Think of the vantage point from which you’ll view your birdhouse, and then overlap the sticks and branches to represent that view. For example, sometimes stick eggs overlap and sometimes not. We did both!

My son loves cardinals, especially the contrast of bright red cardinal feathers against the snowy white. For this kid’s collage project, we found an image online that inspired him. We call it seeking “visual inspiration.” We then printed the image and used it as a background for his collage.

Next, we looked through the magazines and tore out the pages that featured the colors red, black, and orange. My son decided to use the magazine letters with the white paper background as snow, and it turned out great! Finally, he started to make bird feathers by gluing them together by tearing shapes out of red paint.

As a final step, we tore off small dots of white to add some dimension to the falling snow in the background.

In this series of collages, we cut out geometric shapes to create a simple racing car, and then applied those shapes to textures and images we placed in magazines. Cut out the shapes to make a racing car, but this background design is a six-year-old abstract painting. The design reminded me of wheels, so we added a racing car. Learn more about encouraging process art in our other kids’ art posts.

School holidays give us more time at home to be creative and make art. At Thanksgiving, we sat down and created paper cut collage turkeys. For this design, we added one of our favorite craft materials: googly eyes (we have lots of ideas for making art with googly eyes)!
