Comic Character Design Ideas – I bet my hard-earned pounds back in the days, weeks, months, years, decades, when we were all mesmerized and addicted to comic book art and stories.

We usually wrote our creations on the back of our school books and sometimes we even made real books out of scrap paper and felt pens and lovingly glued or placed them in a messy mess and then handed it over proudly. Read our mother. And enjoy their vacation…you’re welcome mom.

If you’re like me, you’ve tried creating your own animations out of clay or plastic as a kid, with the full assumption that creating your own characters and the finished product would be easy as usual. Batman or Thundercats or Judge Dredd or Captain America or… whatever you could think of was the coolest thing in the world at the time.   It’s easy.

Well, for those of you who continue to do so now… (like me) if you are still drawing and trying to put your ‘adult’ self among the most talented and competitive artists in the world today, I found that as an opinion or argument or… Anyhow here are some important points from my own studies that I would like to share here.

Who is your current favorite character and what do you like about them? Why do you like something special about them?

Try to understand why you like this particular character and why you don’t like others.  Of course, you have to work out how to ‘create a character’ yourself, but the real value of the lesson is found in the characters, how you think and feel about them.  Good, bad or indifferent.

You must know the capabilities and limitations of the two (and all) media in which the character appears.  You have to keep your weaknesses in mind and play your strengths as much as possible.  The lighting effect may be better on the screen (for example).   Think about where your content will fit best and create fonts accordingly.

Who is the character for?  What is the best version of this character for this age group? Should there be multiple versions of characters in multiple versions of the story for different age groups?

All this is worth thinking about at the conceptual stage of character design.  If it’s a ‘serious’ character, can it be simplified (visually) for younger readers or for animation?  And similarly, if it’s a flat/simple design for anime, how does a complex illustration look for a comic book?

What would make someone want to know more about your character when they see it for the first time? What is a hook? Does this character have horns? Or are they water? Or they’re dressed like a 1920s gangster with futuristic weapons in one hand and a time travel book in the other.  Why do I want to watch this?

You also have to think about the fine line between giving the painting character and making it unnecessary.   If the character has a full tattoo on one arm, do you want to draw it 1000 times over and over again?  Is it worth it?

How To Design Comic Characters

Draw the character in different ways: scratchy and serious VS clean and cartoony.  This allows you to not only develop your skills, but also understand the best perspectives of the players.  It will also give you an idea of ​​what the character might look like in another artist’s hand.

What are the player’s strengths? Whether swimming fast or solving crime problems, it’s up to you to tell the story

  The power of the eyes.  Big hands, cool glasses, protective armor etc.  Give a visual picture of the most distinctive features of his character.

Just as a character can be sold in pictures, so can they be sold in color.  Use colors wisely to add value to the overall design.  Think of the color palette in order of importance Why should the wreath be orange?  What does it bring to the party?

Books For Character Designers

Give your character something to hold or study.  What is one thing that shows basic characteristics? An umbrella? Flute?… lollipop?   Even though the story takes place in a spaceship, these small human elements help establish the nature of an ordinary plane.

But these kinds of material things must have a purpose, a purpose.  You have to try to tie these little quirky characters into the story in some way.

You need to know how it all looks, and you need to put together a strong communication letter with different perspectives on these characters, including a good shot.

A good contact letter is useful as a reference point when you start ‘shooting scenes’.  If you want an aerial or worm’s eye view of the page, you need to know what the character should look like from those angles and match it.

Who most resembles your character in real life or … you see in movies?  How well do they speak in conversation? How do they stand up? Are their actions the result of significant events in their background? What do they do with their hands? How good (or bad) are his social skills?

After evaluating the real person/situation (or existing imaginary one), you need to know the nuts-and-bolts of your character’s personality and convey that to each panel as best you can, and you need to expand on that as well.  Each character must act and walk within their own character to clearly define it.

Either they hide their true feelings deep down, or they are an open book full of emotions that are very obvious.  All images/panels should have exaggerated qualities.

What does it all mean?  Why are the characters motivated to act (and react) the way they do… and why do I care? What motivates them? What do they want in the end? Why do they need it?

Although not part of the first story, you should know these things.  Once you know what your characters want, they will begin to tell you what to say in the dialogue as you write.

Background story is important.  The character’s existence must be justified by a… reason.  How did they get to this point in their lives?  Should the cause be celebrated? Or does it cause fear? Have they accepted the past? Or want to manage their daily things?

You should know (roughly) the lives of the players so far.  This will encourage more natural behavior in most situations.

Think about the world and climate they live in, what they wear and why.  How does it look in 3 dimensions?  What is the best version of the final scene of the environment? Can (and should) it be improved?

What will the character be like? Do they have an accent? Do they speak English? do they talk If so, try creating actors to play them in your mind and hear the actors’ voices in your head as you write the dialogue.

Get feedback from people you don’t know and focus on other developers.  Have them pick out the holes in the design and challenge your idea… or fix it.
