The design concept drawings include all floor plans, detailed floor plans and elevation drawings. We work through all the details of the layout, the main points of the master plan and the exterior architectural style of the home. A bit of background will give you an idea of what the industry is like, I graduated in design from Stoke Trent University in central England and started working in graphic design straight out of university. As a junior designer, I tried to focus on myself by refining the looks of other senior designers. At 5:30 p.m., as the staff started to leave the room, I stopped and finished the scenes, trying to fit in as much of the presentation as possible. We used stamp paper and old glass bottle “magic stamps”. It was going to be difficult, most of the visual presentations were headed to London and there were big names like L’Oreal, Kenwood, Pretty Polly and Yardley, so the designs had to be solid. I was a junior in the business, so I mostly cleaned desks in the studio, wiped and filled in markers.

A year later I was working on my own and being young and eager to impress, I got noticed. A year later, I was invited to work at another emerging agency, so I jumped at the chance. Two years later, I reconnected with a new agency full of talent and people I had worked with before. But this was different, I was now on their level. I am the fourth person to join this new company. Within six months there were fifteen employees and within six months thirty. When I left the company after 19 years, I became the board director and creative director, with fifteen designers and another fifty employees.

Over the past 15 years, the retail design industry has become increasingly competitive. In the late 80s and early 90s, three or four successful companies suddenly saw teams of designers, salespeople, and production controllers split into teams and start their own companies. This meant that all the new agencies were looking for the same type of clients – ten agencies were now building beauty, health and fragrance companies instead of two or three.

Responding to a client’s brief is easy, but to make your work stand out, you need to get your head around it and look at the whole project backwards. Break out of the box to get your products noticed faster than other brands in the retail arena. I think I have that ability, the ability to look in the mirror to see something that no one else has seen.

Back wall design concepts drawn on the site are painted on the train and emailed to customers within an hour of visiting the site and leaving the store. Very fast, a little clumsy, but approved by the customer!

Sketch To Reality: Using 3d Modeling For Architectural Concept Design

Being able to get ideas down as quickly as possible, being confident and looking polished is also a challenge. Many agencies rely on computer generated CAD renderings, don’t get me wrong – but to get a client to sit down and finally wake up, you can’t beat a few hand-drawn sketches.

Over the years we’ve stocked cabinets and planner boxes with A2 and A3 stamp pads, multiplied marker sets and foam tapes and inks, spending thousands of dollars each year on the next best marker, the best pens and markers. For a typical project I use twenty sheets of A3 paper, five sheets of black drawing paper and fifteen markers filled with fresh ink… I was one of four visionaries working on six to eight projects a week.

Client briefs go via email or I meet the client to discuss their requirements. I will be provided with the product, advertisement and all information related to that product. All USPs, benefits and color information are provided and the customer may be interested in a particular style or shape. This means that 9 times out of 10, I fully match their brief, but also show them other ways to make the products stand out in the store.

I always play by the rules. When a department store says they can’t leave a certain size or area, we always push the envelope to make the client’s brand stand out and ultimately attract the buyer.
