Cool Design Ideas For Art – As we turn the corner for back to school, check out ideas for middle school art projects and how to tackle the first days of school. High school art is about building on the foundations taught in elementary school and allowing students the space to explore subjects and styles that interest them. They still need a lot of scaffolding and structure, but you can start to give them some freedom to express themselves.
I love focusing on projects that teach important techniques while providing enough space for students to create unique works of art. This can be hard to do, they still need structure to feel successful, but you want to avoid cookie cutter projects. I often use art elements and design principles as a way to guide my curriculum, while still incorporating a wide variety of materials and topics.
Cool Design Ideas For Art
The first day of school can be chaotic. There is some administrative work to be done, and it can be difficult for crafty middle schoolers to sit and listen. I like to give them an activity, like an introductory material, to start with while I put everyone in their assigned seats. Once everything is settled, I discuss the curriculum and we start a quick activity for the day.
101 Awesome Drawing Designs: Easy And Exciting Ideas For Creative Fun!
The first day is all about keeping things moving and interacting with the kids. I don’t start longer projects until the second or third day of school. My projects from day one have been decorating portfolios (joining two pieces of poster board and decorating with markers) or working with elements of art materials.
Last summer I finished my first full year of high school. Throughout the year, students are taught drawing, painting and sculpture techniques. Each project focuses on an element of art or design principles. It became one of my most popular subjects in high school. Check out that bundle as well as my other popular items below. Kids will love learning about the OP Art movement and creating their own unique designs. Follow our step-by-step op art drawing tutorial to create fun ‘tricky line’ designs with shadow.

We usually complete this with third graders. You’ll be surprised at some of the results you get. However, some students at that age do not have the skills or fine motor skills.
Envelope Art Ideas — Art & Happiness
Have them guess what they think “Oops” means. They know optical illusions and understand that artists have created art around this concept.
We wanted to explain to the children that it was like 4 of them realizing that they were all making art with the same style and ideas in the 1960s.
See different works of art from the Op art movement. Use some of the following questions to start a discussion with the children.
Note: You can also use similar questions and prompts when looking at other abstract artists like Kandinsky or Mondrian with children.

A note about paper direction: these drawings work best if the paper is horizontal, but we have a few where the child does really well on vertical paper.
Try to make the point evenly. To do this, start from the center and add them to the side.
We also call it the frown line or the smile line depending on where you hold the paper.
Working from top to top, draw curved lines until that line comes off the page. The lines keep getting smaller and smaller.

Repeat drawing curved lines. Some of your lines or “worms” may collide with other drawings and lines. This is natural and part of the drawing.
If you have empty white space between fat lines, draw a teardrop shape and then curved lines until you run off the page.
If you draw with a pencil (as we recommend), when you’re done, outline with a black marker. Erase the extra pencil lines before moving on to the colored pencils.
This drawing is best if you outline it with a regular stick with a fine tip. If the lines are too small, use an ultra-fine tip marker.

You will use the same color throughout the ribbon. On the edges, you want a darker value. Press hard and fade so the center is very light or white. Repeat on the other corner.
Experiment with the direction you paint. Some beginners find it easier to paint vertically, while others prefer horizontally. Choose the one that works best for you.
Repeat the darker corners of the same color on every other strip. Use shading to create darker values in corners of a different color.
The Art Of Graphic Design: Turning Ideas Into Visual Masterpieces
Color each row with a different pattern. You can use the same two colors or change the design of your pattern.
These drawings will take some time to complete. If you make them too big, the kids may get discouraged before they finish.
Yes, art classes don’t just emerge from a creative vacuum. Over the years, the above directions are how we have found to best explain to 3rd graders and up. This is a lesson my dad (a high school art teacher from the 80s) has been doing forever.
We show several different steps in the drawing process to help create fat lines or worms.
