Today I am sharing my privacy solution in corner bridge. If you follow Serendipity Refined on Instagram, you know that ten days ago I decided to do some landscaping in front of the farmhouse. I created a 60-foot berm that is almost boomerang-shaped and has a variety of evergreens as well as ornamental shrubs and bushes as well as flowering and perennial roses that will never die. They not only provide privacy but also provide a focal point in our yard
This is what our yard looked like when we moved in. Between the house and the street, the only piece of land was a large pine tree. Since we live on a corner and at the top of a hill, the headlights of cars driving south or west after dark shine directly into our current two bedroom and dining room windows. Once the renovations are complete, our master bedroom will move to the other side of the house but our new guest rooms will be at the front of the house with north facing windows, so privacy is on the way!
Outside The Box
The first thing I did when planning this bed was to use a garden trowel to remove the bed frame. By using a pencil to create the map, I can stand back to see how it looks and make the necessary adjustments before marking the map with spray paint. After the design was set, we cut the straw with sod card to reuse it somewhere in the back yard.
After that was completed, we brought nine tons (three full truckloads of barrels) of manure mixed with sand and gravel to make the bed a certain length and shape. I like to use compost when I put in a new berm. I’ve used it when we’ve landscaped our last three homes and I find that the nutrients it provides help new plants to establish quickly and it works like a dream for growing lawns from seed again. !
I was also able to reuse several tons of limestone that we cut last year for the pool, which we found hidden by a tree in the back yard. After the compost and rocks were in place, I used stakes to mark the location of the larger trees. Also, opening the trees was easier than carrying eight feet of wood! 🙂
The big bushes were put in first, followed by a red rose and a blooming maple tree. Once they were there I planted two varieties of hydrangeas and several varieties of white roses including some of my favorites by David Austin.

I decided to keep this bed neutral by limiting the plants I chose to purple, silver gray and white. Single pinks range from subtle brown on rose petals as they open to white and hydrangea flowers turn pink as they age.
I used two varieties of catnip, cashmere “lamb’s ears” and a few varieties of my signature lavender as a ground cover for this bed. These plants will fill the edges of the bed and “spill” to create a common feeling for the front of our house. After construction is complete I will replicate many of them by planting the foundation for our main entrance.
