First of all, let me say that we are not professional carpenters at all. So we started this project a little blind, but very determined.

It’s not a perfect angle, nor are the walls and floor perfectly flat or straight. We had to determine at what angle we wanted to open the TV and at what height. We then had to determine the width based on the TV stand. There had to be enough space not only for the TV, but also for her legs, since the wall is tilted.
We looked for studs, then cut 1″ x 2″ boards to support the shelves and determined the size of the unit. For stability, we attached these boards to pegs.
The MDF boards that would serve as shelves were then cut to size, using the backing boards as guides. We used MDF boards to make sure they are strong and durable. We simply measured the distance between the support boards end to end to determine our size and shape.
Cut the baseboard in areas that would be open or exposed. Then add 1/4 inch to cut out the bottom.

Add carpet to the top half of the unit. We added a crown molding to the top and then trimmed the sides with a pendant to add character.
Add boards that will serve as artificial side doors. We were originally going to use MDF, but due to its thickness and weight we felt it was too heavy and would cause too many unnecessary gaps. So we used a thinner board. We also added a lintel at the top to hold the barn door hardware and avoid gaps in the base. We decided that only the middle door would be needed to function so that we could store and access the various components of the console, stereo, DVD player, etc.
Added sliding pieces to the lintel and hung the center door after cutting it to fit the sides.
For staining or painting. I originally planned to paint. Then when we looked at it we thought this stain could be beautiful and give a nice rustic look. The problem, however, was that MDF doesn’t stain well, and with different wood species, the stain color won’t look consistent. So I went back to my original color idea and I really liked it. (we sealed the gaps and sanded before painting)

Despite the difficulties in implementing this project, it was worth the work. I like the clean, fresh look it gives the room. It is a beautiful focal point and does not offend the eyes. Can you believe what a difference a piece of furniture can make in a room?
I’m very happy with how it turned out. After Christmas, I changed the furniture and my husband really wanted his leather chair back in the room. I like the way it adds a different kind of texture and warmth to the room, and the new bamboo blinds….
