We call it a “modern cottage” and it’s basically a sleeker, more elevated interpretation of farmhouse style.

First: Where did the modern cottage come from? As mentioned above, this evolving aesthetic draws inspiration from the classic farmhouse style, which is warm, homey and relaxing. But this face developed significantly and became bigger every year.
The modern cottage aesthetic is truly the best of both worlds: it combines the hospitality, comfort and rustic warmth of a farmhouse style with the benefits and sophistication of modern design. Instead of being too much of one thing, she thrives on contrast. Think: an antique wooden bookcase lined with vintage books, a framed marble coffee table and a chair with a boucle accent. Style has been reinvented. The architectural pediment gives the room a recognizable vintage cottage style. Other elements are the result of simple reinvention: Sharon made a floral pillow out of curtain panels she bought at World Market.
The dining room, kitchen and family room make up what Sharon calls the great room of the house. He wanted it to be warm, inviting and “comfortable on the feet”. He used gray as a neutral color in the family room area. Sharon loves to decorate her shelves for the seasons, holidays and parties by changing the accessories.
Second Life Furniture. The front living room has many interesting elements, including an architectural pediment: a headboard from Eastlake Furniture. It was dark, so Sharon stripped it down and painted it to make it look timeless. He also painted a small sideboard gray-green (he mixed the colors) and white, leaving stains on the top. The coffee table was found in the trash. The desk was $40 at the thrift store. Sharon painted the bottom and left spots at the top. Roses from her English cottage, coffee table, milk glass, shop. Sharon put together baskets from thrift stores and made curtains out of beige linen.

When Sharon and her husband moved into their newly built four-bedroom home in Redlands, California, the walls were white and the floors carpeted and linoleum. “We put travertine on the kitchen floor and installed plank floors instead of carpet in the rest of the house,” says Sharon.
Vintage dining room. Sharon, a lover of typography, often makes the walls herself. The dining room features a signature fruit stand she created to capture the spirit of summer. The lamp board is a mid-century piece that Sharon found at a thrift store for $50. The 7-Up caddy was a $10 store. The chairs are from a yard sale and painted white. Sharon found the stained glass window 25 years ago at an antique store for $40.
“I wanted a streamlined, simple look in the kitchen with simple display cabinets with glass inserts.” My son, Clayton, installed the beadboard, base and crown moldings, and chimney stacks. We replaced the granite countertops with quartz and painted the walls blue to add color.”

The writing on the wall. Sharon made the BAKERY sign in the kitchen using a Cameo electronic cutting tool, a sign machine that cuts vinyl to look like a template.
“Every Sunday we all have dinner together in the kitchen: my husband, our four boys, their spouses and our grandchildren.” “We talk about the week and enjoy each other’s company,” says Sharon. “My sisters-in-law help me in the kitchen.” Besides food, we make great memories together. There is always laughter and children running around. I needed a big kitchen where everything could happen and everyone could feel comfortable.”
Innovative upgrade. Sharon gave her built-in cabinets a style boost by replacing the shelves with wood stained in a richer finish. Since she removed the doors, these cabinets are now a decorative focal point for her colorful cottage-style accessories.
This loft houses the children’s chairs that Sharon collected for the architectural design of their beloved farmhouse. A solid piece of wood is a Hoosier cabinet (they were often used as pantries when they were built many years ago). He bought it at an antique mall in the 1980s. The eraser belonged to his mother. His mother showered her grandchildren with sweets. Architectural remains are hung on the large wall. “It’s more interesting to have architectural elements to salvage than one big painting on the wall,” says Sharon. She found architectural patterns at thrift stores and antique shops to add layers of cottage style.
Neutral Fall Decor Ideas For A Warm And Comfy Cottage
Bright colors tie the house together and everyone loves this vintage rubber car.
Sharon explained her approach to decorating when faced with a large wall in her colorful vintage cottage. “I like to have one main focal point and leave space on either side,” she says. “Start from the center [and move] outwards, and don’t try to fill the whole space, because the eye won’t have anywhere to focus.” Sharon loves decorating for Christmas, so she chose a neutral background to change her accessories for the seasons. “Old windows and high-quality, colorful silk flowers are my favorite things to decorate with,” she says.
The bedroom is a treasure. This spare bedroom is a mix of old and new. Sharon spruced up this yard sale with paint and new handles for vintage cabin charm.
Sharon painted the white bedroom walls a soothing blue. She sewed curtains and lined them with dark fabric. She also made a shelf above the bed with shelves found in an antique store. To make the shelf, he bought a piece of wood, sawed it and washed it. Then he hung the window over the shelf as an architectural detail. The room has old windows and silk flowers that Sharon likes to decorate. She uses coral colors to brighten up spring and summer, and cream and white for Christmas.
Ways To Refresh Your Living Room For Spring
I’m looking for glass. Windows are one of Sharon’s favorite things to decorate with because of their versatility and architectural interest. He likes to mix old windows with new – he likes the English country house look he can create in a house for the construction classes.

Sharon likes to relax in the tub, so she designed her master bathroom in spa colors. The guest bathroom has Thibaut wallpaper. The mirror is from Hobby Lobby and Sharon placed the jars for added interest and a cottage bathroom look.
The house has two guest rooms. Sharon calls one of them the “Pink Room” with its pink and gray color palette. It was also inspired by a family event. When her son Derek and his wife Kaylee got married, their wedding colors were brown and cream.
