Vintage oars were placed in the corner of the room, adding a touch of coastal charm to my summer living room.
How To Mix Up Your Decor Style
Nothing says beach house more than this whale painting I bought at a local shop in Gig Harbor, WA a few years ago.
These navy blue and white pillows were one of my favorite purchases this summer. I bought them at Pier 1. Unfortunately they were sold out when I tried to buy more.
Fresh cut flowers from my garden are my favorite summer decoration. For example, I cut these hydrangeas from various bushes in my garden and brightened up the room with these amazing colors.
I’m always looking for new ways to make the living room more interesting, so I brought all my colorful glass bottles from another room. They are a good option for decorating a summer house.

Click here… Designer Ally Whalen’s creative spirit doesn’t allow her to keep her rustic farmhouse style the same year-round, so she uses each season as an opportunity to make a fashion statement in her home. In fact, she has remodeled her home at least seven times.
TRANSFORMED OUTSIDE. The part of the house Ally liked least was the original red brick facade with black shutters. For a bright, fresh look, she had it painted white and added taupe shutters. The large tree is an Autumn Blaze maple and the bush is a Japanese maple. To the right is a cherry tree.
The location of the house was perfect. The tree-lined cul-de-sac would be a safe place for the kids to play with the other kids in the neighborhood, it was close to the freeway for Ally’s commute, and the beautiful backyard with a creek running through it was very private.
STAIRS AND STRIPS. The entrance hall has gray and white stripes that Ally painted on the staircase wall. “This area shows the combination of rustic and cottage elements,” she says. The bench works well near the front door for convenience and because Ally wanted something in front of the wall. Ally made the pillows for it. She painted the railing black to create a strong contrast.
15 Cozy Farmhouse Living Room Ideas We Love
But while the house was well kept and Ally liked the floor plan, she “hated” the red brick exterior, heavy red curtains and tile floors. And the simple interior didn’t stay that way for long: She immediately painted the yellow living room walls a steel gray blue and built an extension to enlarge the house.
MEETING PLACE. The living room showcases the natural elements the designer likes to add to a room, such as bamboo Roman blinds and wicker chairs. “Every room benefits from a piece of wicker,” says Ally. She keeps all her large pieces neutral and then adds a pop of color with cushions and pillows to make the room cozy. Ally says you should never be afraid to add some blue to a room—it looks fresh for spring and brings out the wood tones. Ally anchored the room with a neutral rug. Her tip for blankets is to layer them: make sure the bottom blanket is very thin and place a softer blanket on top.
While Ally liked the design of the simple Shaker-style kitchen cabinets, she painted the dark-stained finish herself—not an easy task in 2007. “Painting cabinets wasn’t as easy then as it is today. I had to scrape it, sand it, prime it and apply a top coat,” she says.
KITCHEN CLEANING. Ally tackled a bigger project by painting the previously stained kitchen cabinets herself, long before painting cabinets became fashionable. To do this, they had to be sanded with liquid sand and several layers of primer, paint and topcoat. “It’s a lot easier now,” she says. The wood on the island and the quartz countertop were added. She replaced the furniture legs on the island for added height and style. Ally installed glass in the cabinet doors on the right to give the small kitchen an open look.
Simple Steps To Achieve A Cozy Rustic Cottage Vibe 💝home Tour
Another labor-intensive household task was removing the floor tiles to install hardwood floors. “We tackled the floors ourselves; It took my husband five days to remove the tiles,” says Ally. “Next time I’ll get someone to do it.”
DARK AND LIGHT. This view of the dining room overlooking the family room highlights the dark walnut hickory floor that was originally tiled. Ally knocked down a wall with two windows and a door to the porch to create a large opening into the addition, creating an open, airy feel.
Ally calls her home’s decor “rustic cottage chic.” She achieved the look by combining rustic, country-style furniture with soft fabrics and natural elements. “To recreate the look, decorate the room with wood, but don’t overdo it,” she says.
A LA CARTE DINING. This dining area between kitchen and living room follows Ally’s design philosophy of decorating in unexpected ways. She doesn’t like mixing elements together, so here she paired it with an upholstered bench on one side, mismatched chairs and a wicker chair. She reupholstered the commercial bench with fabric for indoor and outdoor use, which is particularly suitable for durability with children. The lamp was a find at the Habitat ReStore. For the small room, Ally wanted simple lighting that matched the room.
7 Secrets To A Relaxing Cottage Style
“Don’t panel the walls with wood – pair it with soft accessories like curtains, cushions and upholstery pieces.”
Rustic cottage tablescape. The dining table is decorated with bright citrus colors for spring combined with natural elements. The table runner picks up the gray in the room.
Her line includes custom sofas, chairs and upholstery available at her store Simplicity Interiors. Some of the most popular home decor items in her store include unique pillows, accessories, lamps, mirrors and art. “People like the casual, personal atmosphere when they come into a store that’s not a big box store,” she says.
