Creative Border Design Ideas – Doodle borders are definitely my favorite things to do when decorating a bullet journal. They make your layouts look nice and elegant while keeping the content of your layouts organized.
Often when I share my doodle board/divider ideas on Instagram, a common question I get asked is how do you come up with so many of them?

Since I’ve been posting a lot of border ideas on my IG for guys to make, I thought in this blog post I’d show you how you can easily make your own doodle borders.

In this section, I will share with you a few simple techniques that you can use to create different designs for your borders. Everything is basic and easy.
The simplest form of borders and dividers are just lines. A variety of lines, from straight, broken and dotted to wavy, curved and zigzag, can be used as borders and dividers.
These lines are ideal for a minimalist bojo spread, as well as for those last minutes. You can also use them in your study notes.

Motifs are small decorative figures that repeat in designs and patterns. They can be as simple or fancy as you like.
I illustrated all the points above using the heart and star motifs as seen here.
To make these dividers I chose little floral doodles from the floral motifs and I think they are perfect to go with themes like spring and flowers.
It will be handy to create doodle pages like this in your journal for future reference. You can refer back to the pages later when you need ideas and inspiration for a new spread.

This method is similar to the previous one, only simpler. If you’re looking to create borders that are minimal and still a bit doodley, this would be the way to go.
Drawing such dividers is very easy and quick. All you have to do is draw one of the different lines shown above, then add some motifs to the edges or somewhere in between.
I love using these types of dividers to add a little fun element to a minimal and last minute spread.
Dot grids on bullet journals are useful when you want to create lines, shapes, and designs.
5 Beautiful Borders
These are just a few examples, but you can create hundreds of different border designs by connecting the dots in your bullet journal. How awesome is that?! Connect dots, geometric elements such as lines, angles, rectangles, and triangles, and then repeat them regularly or irregularly in a line.
Geometric patterned boards look great and take seconds to make. Doodling them is also very satisfying. Use them to add some flair to a minimalist layout.
Of course, all of these methods aren’t the only way to create borders in your bullet journal, but they’re the easiest to get started with, especially if you’re a new doodler.
Since the bullet journal spread is so free-flowing and also has a beautiful design, I like to use the doodle borders for decorative purposes and to organize the layout. Let me show you some of the spreads I made using doodle borders.

Perhaps the most common use of doodle borders in a bullet journal is to decorate the edge of a spread or to use them as dividers to organize the content of your layout.
I did this first by using space themed motifs, creating thick borders around the edges, and then using dotted lines to separate the days of the week.
You can try a similar layout in your magazine by creating borders with motifs that match your theme.
To make this weekly spread super simple, I’ve drawn 6 pages, 3 on each page, to divide the spread into 8 equal parts. Labeled the sections, added bright yellow for a little pop of color and was done. I did this spread in less than 5 minutes.

You can use doodle borders to create rows and columns in a bullet journal layout. This is a simplified example, but you can create the parts you need using the borders. I love how they make the range look great without taking up too much space.
Experiment with doodle border designs to create fun dividers, frames and wreaths. If you like to follow monthly themes in a bullet journal, you may find this idea useful.
I used this simple idea to decorate April’s minimal monthly spread and I am very happy with the results. I made a small flower crown for the head and a matching border on the next page.
Sometimes I like to add a subtle style to my bullet journal using geometric borders – this is a monthly theme idea for you if you’re into design. Here are two examples.

In addition to bullet journaling, you can use doodle borders to decorate your books, art journals, diaries, notes, bookmarks, greeting cards, and other projects.
Here’s a picture of a themed bookmark I made. I decorated it with a border with appropriate motifs and colors.
I made this pattern by coloring a vertical flower border – a fun little activity for you to try when you’re particularly bored and stressed. Drawing and coloring in patterns is easy and stress-relieving. You can also use this idea to decorate or fill in blank pages in a bullet journal.
