How To Make Character Designs For Your Art Portfolio That Will Impress Admissions Counselors
I studied CDW studio during high school through my vocational animation course. CDW was valuable to me because of its extensive artistic knowledge.
Everything was brand new when I started, but the instructors at CDW made me feel comfortable – they gave feedback to students based on their level.
Learning the basics from the bootcamp classes was very helpful. I was exposed to perspective, construction, rendering and more. When you start your studies, you will experience introductory classes, each of which consists of three lessons. The courses are: anatomy (3D sculpture), 3D animation and design. Then in the second year you choose your specialization: 2D or 3D. I chose 2D because I wanted to do 2D animation, character design and digital painting in my second year.
Unfortunately, I didn’t learn storyboarding until I found myself enjoying the process. I like to work on my own stories through my personal projects. At the time, I chose 3D animation, but I felt out of place and felt that my work wasn’t as expressive as I wanted it to be. I may return to 3D in the future, but for now I want to focus on my 2D work.

The tool I use for most of my pipeline is Clip Studio Paint for both art and animation. I also used Photoshop during the first semester of my studies at CDW Studios. I think it’s better for digital painting than animation work. So Clip Studio Paint fits into my pipeline, and I still use Photoshop when needed. Lately I’ve been using various process tricks made by Japanese anime artists. I haven’t tried them yet because I haven’t found a suitable piece of art to apply them to.
Clip Studio Paint contains advanced tools that I use in my work. Tools like: vector layers, magic wand, liquefy, color, cut layers and more.
I’m constantly creating new tools in Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop, watching other artists’ processes and experimenting with tools that fit my process.
Photoshop is a good option, but it depends on your needs. Based on my personal use, I consider Clip Studio Paint to be an affordable art software. It can be a useful software for young budding artists that can later be purchased for professional use. It has similar features to Photoshop, but without the image manipulation tools.
Transform Pumpkins Into Your Favorite Book Characters
The inspiration for my art style comes from my interest in anime style. I’m always interested in how stories are told through this medium. The inspiration for the drawing below comes from a mobile game called
. The game is known for its rich world structure and modern high-tech clothing designs for its characters.
The work shown below is my third year character design work process. The task was to complete the character in 3 weeks.
In the first miniatures, I usually draw sketches of the character. The projects are not so detailed, but quick and simple. I am looking for references as sources of inspiration for defining the basic design.

After the miniatures, I do another round of detailing the shape as part of the build process. This step involves improving the anatomy of the character. I used Bryan Lee’s method to break down the character. I learned this during my third year of study in Peter Yong’s character drawing classes.
For line work, I use vector layers because they give me more control over the lines. I can edit my lines or change the thickness at any time. I use the tool a lot because I spend a lot of time cleaning the line.
To learn more about vector layers, they are a tool that allows users to modify lines by adjusting individual points on the line. Erasing lines is faster using the vector eraser tool, and users can adjust the thickness of the line.
At this point I created some color variations of the figure and chose the ones I liked the most. I made logo patterns for the character’s armor and drew silhouette patterns.
Character Development: How To Create Fan-favorite Characters In 5 Steps
After adding the base colors, I decide which colors will fit the design. I use a magic wand to completely color each part. The tool identifies the parts to be colored.
After applying even colors, I block the direction of the lighting with a stiff brush to shade the mid-shadows and an airbrush to shade the softer areas.
I added a darker tone value to the darker areas of the figure, keeping the light direction in mind.
I then added highlights to the areas where the light hits. Then I added his shadow on the floor using his silhouette and transforming him. To add some depth to the drawing, I added a soft airbrush gradient that runs from the bottom to the middle of the body to support the direction of the lighting.

The backgrounds for most of my characters tend to be simple so I can make it clear where the light hits. In some cases I don’t care about the background, but only if I’m making a character sheet.
I finish the work by correcting the mistakes. Then I add effect filters like “layers” to make the colors stand out.
This is the end of my process. I developed the process over time while at CDW Studios. We hope this gives you an idea of how to create a character design. You can go deeper to explore character traits or keep it simple. Most importantly, have fun!
