That’s why when I came up with the idea of crafting explosion box (also known as explosion box or explosion memory box), I was very happy. The simple idea of a box full of memories would make the perfect gift for many people on my list!

An explosion box is an origami box that opens and “explodes” as soon as the recipient removes the top, revealing pictures, messages and even gifts inside. This is a larger version of our Explosion Cards project.
There are many ways to use this DIY explosion box. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, promotions and even engagements can be celebrated with a box explosion.
The personal aspect of the project makes it versatile! I have also seen people make fan boxes for things like Harry Potter or Star Wars. His abilities are endless.

Made from pretty simple materials and simple origami techniques, the explosion boxes are surprisingly easy to put together. I am happy to share all the details of how to make a box explosion.
I can find all the supplies I need at my local craft store, but they are also available on Amazon.
If you’ve been a scrapbooker, this project is a great way to use up some old items you still have.
To start the box explosion, you can fold 12 x 12 cardboard into a box.

To do this, you need to put the flaps 4 inches on each side, making 9 small 4 x 4 inch squares of paper. The video below should give you a good idea of how to do this.
For accurate measurements, I use a cutting file with a cutting blade from a sewing kit. If you have one, I recommend using it for this project.
In the video I just used a ruler and my finger to hold the box, but a measuring tool would be useful here. I actually found it at my local thrift store after finishing this project.
Once you have folded your card into 9 squares, you need to create the corners. To do this, just bring the edges of each corner together, pull the poster into a triangle on the inside of the box. Again, see the video below.

Once you have folded your corners, you can trim them to give the box a better shape. For this project, I made the star ends by drawing a line from the top of the corner fold to the center of the space next to one of the small squares.
I’ve also seen broken boxes where people make hearts out of the corners too. It is very cute and easy to make.
Once you have completed the first layer of your explosion box, you will want to cut and fold additional layers on the inside. Each layer should be smaller than the previous one to give the project to the broken box.
I made a four-layer box, cutting each layer 1.5 inches smaller than the previous one. If you want to add layers, you can use small increments. It all depends on you.

You just want to fold each layer into a 9 square pattern like a layer, just adjust your measurement accordingly.
For the sake of explanation, let’s say you’re making a four layer explosion box like I did.
After you have folded all the layers, you will want to cut out the corner box from the three inner layers, giving you one more.
When all the layers are cut, put them on top of each other, gluing the parts together as you go. You are done, the exploded box should look like this:

Now that it’s put together, you can get to the fun! You fixed your broken box!
You want to collect pictures and remember to put them in your box. I didn’t want to use the original print for my photo box, so I scanned and printed some digital photos from my computer onto some card stock.
That way I can cut them to the length I want without damaging the same paper that I have on one of the images.
I used white card stock and ribbon to make most of the other embellishments. Instead of complicated prints or tons of colors, I chose origami ideas for the four flaps of my broken box DIY project.

I used this simple overlapping technique twice on the box, once with the curved edges and once with the square ones. Basically, it works by simply folding pieces on top of each other, like a loosely closed box.
I also do a little pull out pocket which I really like. To make the pocket, I took a piece of cardboard and glued the two sides together. I’ll hang it with a small piece of ribbon.
I attached the picture to another piece of car stock and put a drawstring on it with a small thin black elastic cord.
I used a geometric origami shape called a Hexaflexagon to make an infinity loop of shapes. You can see it in the video at the top of the page, but it turned out great!

First I made a hexagon out of the paper. I have all the instructions on how to make a Hexaflexagon. These are really cool, versatile origami infinity loops.
When I made my corner hexagon, I cut three shapes to fit inside the shape. Then I cut the images into three diamond-shaped pieces and glued them to the eyelets in the corner of the hexagon.
It took some trimming and finishing to get it looking good, but the end result was well worth it. Seriously, watch the demo video to see how cool it is!!
Then I cut two small pieces of cardboard and glued them on both sides of the valve, creating a small string inside the broken box.

I slipped the hexaflexagon under the straps so it stays in place and is easy to remove if you want to look at it.
After I decorated all the panels of my broken box, I decorated a tin with a little bow from the dollar store in the center to use as a gift. a little. I also used small bottles and other cool things in the space, but this time I wanted to keep it simple.
The last step to your broken box is to make the top. This can be a bit tricky because your measurements need to be accurate.
For my top, I cut a 7″ x 7″ square and folded it in 1 and 3/8 (one and three eighths) inches on each side.

Lucky for you, I’ve created a copy for you to use! You can print it directly onto 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock and fold accordingly.
For the sides, just use the same folding technique as for the main box, just put the folds on the sides instead of cutting them.

I wanted a 1/4 inch border around each picture, so I made them square, about half an inch smaller on each side than the flap I put on. So outside they are 3.5×3.5. For the 2nd layer, they are 3×3. For layer 3 they are 2.5×2.5 and for layer 4 they are 2×2. Hope that helps.

Hello! Many thanks for this tutorial. I just messed with the cover part. The instructions will make a 7×7 sheet with a 1 3/8 fold. However, in your print it measures 6 3/8 and the folds are 1 inch. Both measures are executed. Just wanted to let you know, I just had to make a change.
