Cute Diary Design Ideas – Often we can feel overwhelmed by the creativity of others. Maybe you’re short on time or struggling to find inspiration for your journal pages. Maybe you need a simpler decorating technique instead of drawing or painting.
Hi, this is Alex (@TheJournalCorner) from The Archer and Olive Messenger Team. Today I’m going to share some great tips for decorating your bullet journal. Although I currently share creative ideas online, I wouldn’t say I’m an artist by nature. Over the years I have learned to use whatever resources I have to create beauty that I cannot paint!
Cute Diary Design Ideas
This blog post will walk you through some simple tips for decorating your pages and is a great opportunity to hopefully use things you already have. Here are some examples of how I created decorative pages using bullet journals and accessories like washi tape and colored paper.
How To Create Eye-catching Journal Pages
Remember, if you prefer to watch, you can find a video at the end of this page that takes you through my thoughts. I’ve also created a printable to help you remember these tips.
I have been using Arrow and Olive magazines as my arrow magazines for 4 years. The examples I have posted on this blog are using the B5 size. This large journal allows me to be creative with accessories like stickers and washi, but of course choose the size that works best for you.
There are tons of extras that can help you get creative with your journal when you’re not sure how to draw yourself. I hope these ideas help you use up some supplies in your journal that you don’t have yet.

One of the easiest ways to decorate your page is to use washi tape and stickers. This can be purely decorative or more functional. Archery and Olive has lots of decorative washi tape and stickers.
A washi tape theme often inspires me for the month in my bullet journal. It can be used across the page, filling in empty spaces and creating an aesthetic division between parts of the layout.
In some cases I have actually cut the washi tape to create a more adhesive effect. For example in November 2023 I cut out archery and a bookshelf in an olive wash so it looked more realistic on my page. It would have taken me a lot longer to draw the bookshelf and definitely wouldn’t have looked as detailed!
In January 2023, I used duct tape to glue the elements together. I also used wide ribbon to make a single page ornament. This works especially well if you cut the paper to make a hat door or flap.
How To Set Up A Minimal Bullet Journal & Spread Ideas
In September 2023, I created a large article in the Bullet Journal. For the decorative cover, I cut washi tape to look like washi tape as a decorative part of the page.
If you find washi tape that you like, you can also cut it to make a font. Here I used a craft knife to cut washi tape into letters as part of the quote page.
I use archery and olive stickers to decorate and save time. Monthly Kit Club includes themed stickers, such as dates and titles. This will help you finish a page in your planner or bullet journal faster.
I usually put stickers at the end of the magazine roll, starting with the larger ones. This allows you to fill virtually any space. You can also stick on top of washi tape or colored paper.
My August Bullet Journal Spread
There are ways to get creative with stickers to make your page more personal. Maybe crop them to fit text or make them tabs. Did you know you can buy stickers? This allows you to print photos, favorite images or quotes and add them to your journal.
One way to make your page more interesting is to add paper, color or pattern. Bows and Olives has many notebooks that can be used as backgrounds, cut into shapes and even use some stationery. You may have postcards, old wrapping paper, stickers that you love – try incorporating these into your site.
For this love letter theme in my bullet journal, instead of drawing lots of envelopes, they were easy to cut out of many different papers. I used the same color scheme with acrylic pencils to match the titles.
My favorite notebook is my Kraft paper from Bow and Olive. I love the relaxed vibe it adds to my journaling pages, especially for fall. I used it as a background for the title, to compress it for writing and to create a window that you can open and close when editing.
January Monthly Cover Page Ideas For Your Bullet Journal
I also love the e-magazines included in the Bow and Olive subscription box. This can be used as a background or added to a page cutout to create a window effect.
It is also easy to cut paper into simple letters. This makes for a very effective title or cover, and you can use the paper a month from now to compile the content.
It took me years to build up the courage to do it at first, but it was a shift in creativity in my bullet journal. I cut out the pages to make the doors and flaps, but I did more creative decorating.
For this September 2022 page, I used a craft knife to cut out pages from my journal and make some “switches” coloring pages with colored paper on the back. It took some planning and time to make sure it worked the way I wanted it to, but it was still a great option for drawing from scratch!
Aesthetic Art Journal Page Ideas And Inspiration
This theme inspired me to cut pages in a more decorative way for the dutch door.
Here for the November theme I also cut the page to create a “table” effect and instead of drawing the table I put a picture on the next page.
Lately I’ve been experimenting with Bullet Journal inks and stamps. These are a quick and easy way to fill out a page or add more information.
In March I used an ink pad to create simple shapes and then simply drew on it. Acrylic pens worked well for this!

Black ink makes them a feature of the page, while more neutral colors allow them to be a background.
One of the main ways I avoid drawing in my bullet journal is to use a pencil. This can be for images, fonts or shapes like this planner paper.
Check to see if you have past month sets from Events and Olive, so you can create a theme for your calendar.
