Want a super cheap and EASY way to make a perfect heart template (without owning a Cricut)? Then use this simple kitchen item…

Heart Tattoo Colored

You know that waterproof backing that has an adhesive side that is used to line your cabinets or drawers? You can use it to create simple templates – a la Cricut (without owning a Cricut!).

All you need is a roll of contact paper (you can get it at your local Dollar Tree or Dollarstore), a pencil, and some scissors.

You will end up with 2 perfect heart patterns. One for drawing inside the heart (positive space) and one for the outside of the heart (in negative space). I’ll show you what each one looks like in the next tutorials.

Now that you’ve set up your templates, it’s time for some painting! Here are 3 different ideas for drawing hearts, in no particular order!

Door Hearts Of Love For February!

Use the positive space heart template (see above) to start your drawing, then use your favorite paints and a regular credit card (or other card) to create the super cool “slide” effect.

This was my favorite technique. I love how rustic it looked – like wood paneling. You can totally have fun and try different colors etc.

Note: you may want to use a card that you don’t need to reuse in stores. Although you can probably wash it, it’s better to use an old card that you no longer need.

Step 1: Add your positive heart template (see above) to the canvas. Just above the heart (on the edge of the contact paper) pour your chosen ink.

Step 2: Take your credit card and gently drag the paint down until it covers the white on the canvas. Rotate the credit card at a 45 degree angle as you pull down (see pictures below).

TIP: don’t pull too hard (ie don’t scratch the canvas). Use light (light) pressure to pull the paint down for best effect.

Step 3: Once you’re happy with the design (you can go over it a few times), then wipe the excess paint off the side (on the contact paper) before removing it.

Step 4: Carefully peel off the contact paper. You may have some bleeding (meaning some ink will have gone under the contact paper).

Heart Coloring Pages

Just try to carefully wipe off all the large balls and wait for the painting to dry. Once it’s dry, use some white paint or another light pastel color and paint over the negative space to get a neat and clean picture!

Using duct tape (or saran wrap) in art may seem strange, but it really creates some wonderful effects. Plus, you probably have some linens in your kitchen right now!

The art of “packaged” paint ends up looking like a cross between popular summer painting (painting-artist) and coloring.

This drawing technique is especially fun for children. My 8 year old loved this and helped me spread the paint.

This technique would also look amazing used on canvas! There are endless possibilities with this technique…

Step 1: Add your positive heart template (see above) to the canvas. squeeze some paint onto the white part of the canvas.

I added some gold acrylic paints in a few places and loved the metallic effect on the heart!

Step 2: Cut a large piece of duct tape (enough to cover the canvas) and place it over the heart. Now the fun part! Use your hands and move the paint around (kids love this!)

Step 3: After you’ve had fun squeezing and moving around the paint (clean hands and all!), it’s time to lift the package to reveal your masterpiece!

Peel the wrap away from you while holding it at a 90 degree angle to the canvas.

Step 4: Peel the contact paper from the canvas. If you have paint “flowing” outside the border of the heart, just let it dry and paint over it with white acrylic paint.

Using cotton swabs is one of my favorite tools in painting. I’ve also used cotton swabs in some other popular painting tutorials like Paint Lavender with Q-tips and How to Paint a Cherry Blossom Tree.

Most of us have thousands of them in the bathroom and can spare a few, for the sake of art!

Step 1: This time add your heart negative space template (see above) to the canvas. Using bright red paint, dip a cotton swab into it and make a frame around the heart. Do not go to the edge of the lane with red.

Step 2: Now take a pink color (or mix some red with white or use pure pink if you have it). Using another cotton pad, apply the pink color to the red dots and continue beyond the red border.

Step 3: Using an even lighter pink (I like to use a fluorescent pink mixed with a lot of white), take a cotton swab and dab this lighter pink in red and extend it to the edges of the canvas

To get the great starburst effect, center the dots around the border of the heart and less as you move towards the edges of the canvas.

Step 4: When you’re happy with your design, peel off the contact paper and you’re done! You have lovely heart art (in negative space!)

I hope you enjoyed these 3 ways to make a heart painting on fabric – and have fun creating your h-art! ❤️

Awesome Christine!! This sure is a fun project – so glad to hear you enjoyed it too 🙂 Thanks for letting me know!

Sorry to hear that. I found that some of the cheaper brands did this to me as well (maybe less tacky glue on them?). You can try another brand if you can.

When painting with a Q-tip, should you let the paint dry first before removing the heart?

Hi Nicole, either way will work. The only thing I can think of is that if you let the paint dry completely, some of the paint stuck to the edges of the heart sticker might come off. So it’s probably best to carefully remove the glue while the paint is still slightly wet. Enjoy! Cheers, Jasmine.
