Dance Dress Design Ideas – This was the wonderful question asked at last week’s WORK 3-day Masterclass event.  Lene, a Danish participant, asked:

“Is it possible to make a list about the Word? I’m from Denmark and sometimes it’s hard to understand the technical terms.”

Soooo, I think the list of sewing notes around the world is a great idea!  However, I don’t know poets and rhymers from all over the world, so I need your help.

Scroll down to find your favorite dance and skating outfits.  To make things clear, I’ve included a photo of the most common sewing terms I use in my blogs, free classes, and Sew Like A Pro™ school.  Apparently, these five words for tailors are the most important things to know in the entire world.  If you are in a hurry, click on the links to jump to a specific place on the page.

Please comment below and share your thoughts on common sewing terms for dance and skatewear in your country!

Feel free to leave other common sewing words like lace appliques or other descriptive sewing words that come to mind.

I call zippers that go well with T-shirts or dresses “invisible zippers”.  Why?  Because if they are done well, as you can see from the two examples in the picture above, they are almost invisible.

According to one of my Sew Like A Pro™ members in the Netherlands, no.  He calls an “invisible” zipper a “blind” zipper.  Which makes sense, because it’s hard to see through.

As for the regular “zipper”, I don’t know if it has a real name or if it’s just “zipper”.  I just know that most of my British Sew Like A Pro™ members call it a “zipper”.

In the USA, a close-fitting garment made of straight material that covers the torso is called a “t-shirt”.  If you’ve attended my Sew Like A Pro™ school or taken one of my free classes with the seamstresses, you know that I use the word “leotard” a lot.

However, a Sew Like A Pro™ member from Canada told me that what we in the US call a “leotard” is what we call “pantyhose” – meaning that to some Canadians, “leotard” covers the legs, not the body.

But then Olivia, a German Sew Like A Pro™ member, told me this week that the words “leotard” and “bodysuit” don’t exist in her language!  He said the Germans call this “trunk shaper” an implanted “body.”

Shh…in just ten days, Olivia will be leaving on a multi-month trip across Europe by train with her sewing and quilting machines.  For better or worse, she said being a digital nomad inspired her to make dance and roller skate outfits while sewing in different places.

Olivia plans to design, make and sell clothes at each of her stations.  All clothing materials will be sourced locally and of course the local landscape and architecture will be used as design inspiration.  Follow Olivia on Instagram or her new website: Olivs Original for some seriously stylish dresses and t-shirts to consider.

In some of my Sew Like A Pro™ tutorials, I use plain colored thread to make the stitch lines stand out. I highly recommend using the same thread when sewing a “real” dancer or skateboarder outfit. 🙂

What To Wear To An Indian Wedding As A Guest

You know those round metal discs that you can use to temporarily close the gap on your leotard/bodysuit/bodysuit?

In the USA, we call these metal plates “snaps”.  Some members of the British sewing school call them ‘poppers’.  Check out the picture above to see the sheet metal I’m talking about.

What are these sheet metal things called in your country?  Leave a comment below for a sewing tutorial in your language!

Or maybe the word “pad” is not what we call the part of the leotard around the pelvic floor between the legs? … Please leave your vote for this too!  Click here to share.

“Trunks” are the parts of the leotard that cover the fabric and other parts of the body.

I use the word “body” a lot because this part of the leotard is usually tucked in away from the neck and armholes.  Therefore, it needs its own voice to be discussed as a separate part of the whole.

What is the sewing time for this leotard in your country?  Or how about a separate pair of panties that you put on when the dress doesn’t have a full leotard?  Click here to leave your comments below!

Okay, so it’s not a buzzword or dress code, but bling is a must for our ballroom and country dance, ice and figure skating costumes!

I call the small stones in the picture of the blue dress “rhinestones”.  I’ve heard my Aussie and Kiwi Sew Like A Pro™ members call these “diamonds”?

I call the larger pieces “jewelry” because that’s what the catalogs and online stores I order from call them.

A little “jewel” is made if you look at the different shapes.  For example, small jewels are indicated by “navettes” on both sides.  But don’t worry about what the subsets are called or we’ll all get confused very quickly.

Are gems called gems in your country?  Or do they have a different name? What is the sewing time for this part of the leotard in your country?  Please leave your comments below about the sewing terms we discuss on this blog.

Originating from South India, Bharat Natyam is one of the oldest dance forms. This dance requires wearing a certain style of saree and pairing it with traditional jewellery. The traditional Indian dance costumes of Bharat Natyam are usually bright and brightly colored silk sarees with rich gold borders.

These dancers are pink purple anarkalis with blue coat, blue dupatta and blue and gold belt. This is a perfect Indian dance costume for Kathak dance which is an ancient Indian dance.

When it comes to Indian dance costumes for kids, it is always a good idea to choose bright colors like green, pink and gold. Beautiful Lehenga dolls have golden border and imagination makes these dolls more beautiful.
