Say Goodbye To Blank Walls With 34 Stunning Above Sofa Wall Decor Ideas
Thanks to the article for providing furniture for this space. I am excited to present a review of the Article modular sofa and Timpani ottoman. As always, my writings and opinions are mine.
Let me start by making it clear to my regular readers: I have never blogged about this room before. When we first moved in, there was a television on a bench in front of the window, two large pieces of brown leather swiveling in front of the television, a bookshelf hidden in the corner, and an old tray ottoman in the middle. They all looked lovely in our old room (where the TV hung on the wall above the fireplace), but in this room they were awkward and completely ineffective. The room was cramped and we still only had 4-5 people.
So we completely redid the fireplace and built a bookshelf for the TV (you can read all about this project here), which rearranged the room in a much more practical way. But even with the addition of a rear seat, we were still able to seat 5 people really comfortably. This is very sad as we are now a family of 6.
Let me make a little clarification: I know this is not a small room by any small standard. But for a large Texas house that regularly accommodates 10-12 adults, it’s not too big either. The room is about 13’x13′, with two walls of large windows (which I love but they make it hard to put furniture in) and thanks to the fireplace renovation we have a wall of closets and a fireplace. The fourth “wall” leads past the bar area and towards our kitchen table.

So, for this living room update, I set two main goals: add more (and more useful) seating AND create a light, bright feel.
Article review of the Cube modular sofa and Timpani ottoman: Use a large piece in a living room:
A few years ago I selected a sofa from an Article for a client (aka my younger brother 😉) and
. I was a little hesitant about ordering furniture that I couldn’t prevent (they only sell it online), but their low delivery price and easy return policy made it worth it… and in the end it turned out to be a perfect sofa: quality , the style and price were unbelievable. When I was thinking about a new sofa for my living room, I started looking at Article and was so happy to find this piece and partnered with them on this project. Kube is a very generous modular sofa (both deep and wide), sold as a three-piece or as a piece (ours has two ends, two middles and a corner to make a big L… and I mean

Despite its size, its low profile made it perfect for our window walls. The former sofa (which wasn’t particularly high-backed) hit the plant pots, barely holding them. The view looks directly onto our backyard and is one of the best parts of this room – and you know how I feel about natural light – so the height of the Cube is perfect. The low profile also helps highlight the high ceilings of the room and make the room appear larger, even though a lot of floor space is actually taken up by the sectional.
Even better, it can seat MANY people comfortably! Our entire family can practically stretch from end to end…not that my kids try – ha!
The fabric has a gorgeous knit look but seems very durable; This is a big factor when choosing furniture that my children will use regularly. To make this easier, the article also has durability ratings for the fabrics on their website; They recommend looking for fabric sofas with a Martindale flex test of at least 25,000 hits… and the Kube will break it by a wide margin of 100,000. The sofa is sturdy enough that you won’t fall into it and get stuck (which is important because of its low weight), but it’s very comfortable to sit on for hours, working on your laptop or watching movies.
The only thing I would change if I had full control is to switch to warm grays instead of cool grays. Our walls, which are Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, is my favorite—a light gray with some warm undertones—and the kitchen cabinets are a darker, warmer gray. The gray blue of the piece is really beautiful (and complements our marble in the kitchen really well). I think it would be a beautiful shade: light enough to help brighten the room (remember one of my goals?), but dark enough to hide the inevitable mess from little kids. The article also presents the Cube in white (I’ll do that)Â

, but I don’t find that practical at this stage of our family’s life) and Thunder Gray (which was actually my first choice, but Glacier Blue was readily available and I liked the idea of a lighter color). All that to say, it’s a beautiful color but sureÂ
Having taught at least one child to walk around the house in the last six years, I’m a big fan of tufted ottomans that double as “coffee tables.” But I’ve never loved any of them as much as I love this one. Timpani in Charme Tan is very beautiful. The modular sofa is the piece that makes the room work, but the piece that I fell in love with is the ottoman: the beautiful light brown genuine leather, the stitching in a lovely pattern, the light tufting… it’s all perfect. And it’s totally baby friendly.
I think the round shape makes it feel like it has more floor space and feels balanced no matter how far it is from the corner of the section…
How did our family room come about? And I am happy to share with you more details about the place (UPDATE: see the rest of the details here!)…

But this article is really long! So I’m saving all the other decorating details for part two. By the way, what do you think? Are you having trouble finding enough seating in your living space? Do you have a small room? Do you think the answer might be a big part of it (even though it seems counterintuitive)? I want to know! Are you wondering how to decorate a living room with a piece? Get 5 tips for creating a bright, open feeling in your living space.
I recently shared my family room makeover, where the article generously offered a large piece and a gorgeous leather ottoman. For all the details about furniture selection and design planning, you can visit our article here. Today I will talk about the second goal I have in this space: a light, bright, spacious feeling (which can be difficult with large furniture!)… in short, how to decorate a living room with a piece.
Large pieces of furniture can sometimes make a room look too heavy, but I knew I wanted this space to be light and airy, so that was the main goal (besides making our living space bigger). To make a space feel brighter and more open, I always go for five default numbers:
You can find light colors that will add light and spaciousness to the living space even for small children.

Our walls stayed the same Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray as our entire downstairs (see all of our paint colors in this house here). A beautiful chameleon light gray color that looks warm or cool depending on the lighting; Perfect for this area. All finishes are Sherwin Williams Extra White.
I loved the dark blue/grey rug in here, but it was too dark for the new look, so I actually replaced it with our front room rug…and I think it’s about right. Light, warm neutral tones with a more traditional Indian style complement the cooler, more modern Cube modular sofa (more on this selection in part 1 of this room). And despite its light colors, I appreciate how forgiving the pattern is to dirt, spills, and stains, which may or may not be a problem for four kids. 😉
