Large pieces of furniture can sometimes make a room feel too heavy, but I knew I wanted this space to feel light and airy, so (besides adding chairs) that was the main goal. I always go to five basic tricks to make a space feel brighter and more open:

Even with small children, you can find bright colors that will improve the light and open feeling of the living space.
Our walls were always Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray on the floor (you can see all of our paint colors in this home here). It’s a beautiful light blue chameleon that looks warm or cool depending on the light – perfect for this space. All trim is Sherwin Williams Extra White.
I loved the gray/grey rug we had here, but it was too dark for a new look, so I swapped it out for the one I also had in our front living room…and I think it’s perfect. The bright, warm rays with a little traditional style are the perfect addition to the cool, modern look of the Cube modular sofa (more about that option in part 1 of this room reveal). And despite its bright colors, I know how it tolerates dirt, spills, and stains that may or may not be a problem for four kids. 😉
A few simple pillows and cheap pillows and a simple (but still kid-friendly) style was all it took.
Inspiring Gray Living Room Ideas
In our family room, I added two of my fig trees (in a tall basket so the baby doesn’t eat the dirt 😉) …
I have two fig trees that I bought on clearance four years ago and they (miraculously) survived in our family, but if you’re worried about keeping one alive, I’ve seen some really big leaf figs, too. I’ve included my favorites here in a variety of styles and price ranges:
A fun feature of this room was the hanging plant. I’m a big fan of balance in symmetry, and this seemed like a good opportunity to use it: balancing a fig leaf on one side of a piece with a vine hanging above the other.
This is a live plant, so I had to do some planning to make sure it wouldn’t drip onto our new couch. I originally had a small hanging concrete planter, but I may have accidentally left it sitting on the counter where the vine hung down so temptingly… (and yes, it was fine, luckily!). In the end, I decided an antique silver bowl (actually a prize given to me by my grandmother decades ago – it’s good when something has history, right?! ) was my best choice. I simply put the potted plant – which has been in its pot since nursery – directly into the silver bowl and hang it on this macrame hanger.

I also added fake green to my vignettes above the television. Anything short of a real watering can is a better fake in my book. 😉
I’m a neutral girl at heart, and I like more interest in texture than color. But regardless of your natural inclination, maintaining a monochromatic look can help reduce the size of the main part. Similar tones can relax, allowing a large sofa to blend in a bit, while the styles offer more variety.
I brought rugs for our trunk table (which makes a great DIY if you can find a log!) Of course, the natural fiber rug by our back door adds those features, too.
The linen look of the sofa, the leather ottoman, and the burlap back of the armchair also contribute to the rich texture of the space. Not to mention the old brick fireplace that balances the white-and-white building (find all the details about the fireplace project here).
How To Arrange Furniture In A Long Living Room
Regardless of whether it’s big or small, using only 1-2 pieces of wall art will help the space feel smaller and more spacious.
The wall space here is very limited, obviously, but I didn’t want the hanging plant to be completely alone. An old frame from my stash (I think it was Hobby Lobby originally?) – also with a natural wooden frame for the building – and an engineer’s print from one of my paintings from our time living in Paris brought the perfect amount of contrast and memory. (PS developer prints are my secret trick for making inexpensive wall art. Just a few bucks for a beautiful print!)
I put in a cheap picture lamp that I ordered from Amazon because we need a lamp in that corner and we don’t have room for a lamp behind the couch. To be honest, it’s a little light and the brass is a bit more yellow than I’d like, but for $25 it’s a nice stand and lamp that works for that corner until I find something perfect.
Cupcake accents in your living room, but too many can make the space feel cramped. Keep it simple and easy!
Seeing Our Living Room In A Whole New Light
The more children I have, the smaller I become. Tell me I’m not alone?! You’ll notice that the coffee and side tables are empty (hello, 10-month-old), and the fireplace is empty, too. I put some of my favorite candles on the mantel (they got a permanent spot) and some of my favorite accessories in the cubbies above the TV.
But as you can see, I tried to leave as much white space as possible, and kept his words in three general groups: natural tones of brown, white, and a touch of blue / green glass to match the blue and green sofa. in the room. And if you’re wondering, here it isÂ
Room, and we keep a few toys down here: games in the cupboard by the fireplace and children’s toys in a basket on the floor. If I’m tired of looking at them, it’s easy to throw them in the back of the basket and cover with an extra turkey towel.

It’s difficult to decorate a large piece of furniture like our main unit, but I think these techniques help the piece to blend in with the living room and keep the space light and bright.
