At this time of year, students completing the introductory phase of the Design and Technology course discuss ideas for their major project for the H.S.C. (Find here some examples of previous works) But before we look at some ideas for your big project, it might be good to check the general requirements of this work set by NESA.

Your Design and Technology MDP is worth 60% of the marks for your H.S.C. and can be started at the beginning of the H.S.C. It contains a practical project as well as a folio documenting the design process carried out to achieve the solution of your project. (Click here for a portfolio guide) The MDP folio and project are marked simultaneously by two or more examiners from NESA and are awarded a score out of 60. To be successful in this project, you must be able to display a wide range of qualities. Your major design project should fit into one of three categories:-

Every product ever made has been designed. This is why the possible options for an HSC major design project are almost endless. All products, systems and environments must be designed by someone at some point, and therefore have the potential to be a successful MDP. A good way to start thinking about possible projects for your HSC is to use thinking organizing strategies such as mind mapping, a PMI table or brainstorming. You may encounter a problem during the day that you think can be done better or easier. These are opportunities to add to your list of possible projects. It is beneficial to create a mind map of the problem you encountered in order to fully explore the idea.
Choose a project that a Year 12 student would reasonably be expected to complete. For example, a team of designers, engineers and draftsmen will be involved in designing an entire hotel, a new highway bridge or a new Olympic Stadium and this team will take years to complete it. You cannot cover all the aspects needed in a project like this in the depth that it needs to be covered. You can choose to design parts of an entire project, or provide ideas for the entire project and then concentrate on one or a few sections. For example, the design of an alternative ergonomic, stable and comfortable chair can be a suitable design project. On the other hand, the exterior or lobby area of a new hotel can also be the basis of your project. You should choose an MDP that reflects your abilities and interests. This will help you stay motivated, even in year 12. A project that you can use later will also help the year progress. Will it be something you can use after completion? Can you use the project as an example of work you can do to find a job or try to get into certain university or TAFE courses. Consider your financial and time constraints. Design can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be. A large project can be expensive and may take too much time to complete, even though most of the best MDPs use minimal materials and are inexpensive to build. Don’t try to do something like you saw in last year’s Design and Technology class. Be new and different. Reviewers want to see something new and imaginative. Think about the last time you saw something new and thought WOW. This is the kind of project you want.
Some of these ideas have links that may be useful as motivational material. I suggest using this list to promote discussion within your class or to start a mind mapping exercise that will eventually generate a short list of ideas.

Whatever your final decision, it is important that you start the process very early in the HSC study year. Don’t bring anything too complicated or beyond your experience and abilities. Ask for advice from your teacher and others.
While this is an example of an Industrial Technology Multimedia project, the concept fits a design and technology project as a project. A product like this would suit a student who wants to raise awareness of an issue, provide resources for an educational institution.
Solar bag product – This product is a good example of the use of different materials and technologies. It is also important to note that the student talked about finding opportunities to attend learning workshops that helped him understand the process of making aspects of his project.
The Bin Buddy, which solves the problem of people moving their bins up and down the long driveway. It attaches to a vehicle with a conventional tow ball so the bins can be easily lifted off the ground, delivered to the curb, then lowered for collection.

Coffee Pod cutter – The need for this product is to create a product that helps reduce the waste produced from coffee pods and that meets a need.
Many of the students think about a need they themselves have and know where there is a gap in the market with a product to meet this need. For example, one student designed a student journal to help students plan their major projects. This student has two important jobs to manage this year and is struggling to find something that will help him manage his time and plan his work.
Another student has a dog with mobility issues, but she still wants her dog to be able to climb on her bed. The student designed a non-slip ramp that sits next to the bed so his dog can easily walk up the ramp with the added benefit of the ramp having shelves for storing dog toys and food.
A few students designed shelves to reduce clutter in a home while also being multi-functional and visually appealing. A wall hanging aimed at Gen Z was designed by another student in bright colors to encourage a positive mood in a print designed by the student.

A recipe book for those who live in an area with little cooking space and no access to kitchen tools was compiled by a student who realized the need for such a cookbook without the same as the market. A traveling chess board was designed by a student who found that similar boards on the market were not very portable, so he designed a board that folds easily but still provides storage for chess pieces.
Two students designed boards with a purpose one student designed a fidget board for children who like to fidget with different objects and one student designed a confidence board to help one increase their confidence. A user can move the motivational quotes on the board and remove them completely to bring as desired.
CLASS OF 2024 🥰 Year 12 students received a graduation gift from the school at the last Year 12 assembly on Wednesday 25 September 2024. Each Year 12 student received a bracelet. This bracelet was designed by staff members as part of the Mercy 5 Staff Formation Project. The bracelets recognize the Irish heritage of our patroness Reverend Catherine McAuley as each bracelet is engraved with ‘trocaire’, the Irish word for Mercy. Ms Banks, Director of Catholic Identity and Mission, told the students gathered in the assembly, “When the Year 12 graduates wear their wristbands, they may remember the words of our school hymn, The Circle of Mercy – ‘That the Circle or Mercy is timeless’.May they travel through life and live the values of compassion and continue to strive for higher things.

Congratulations to Ryan House who are the winners of the Catherine McAuley House Cup for 2024! 🩷🩷🩷 The House Cup was presented at the Year 12 Farewell Assembly held in the Morley Center on Wednesday 25 September. The House Cup is awarded to the Chamber that collects the most House points throughout the year. Points are earned in many ways, including house competitions, sports carnival results and merit certificates and awards received by students throughout the year.
