Design Doodle Ideas – When I was in elementary school in the 1970s, I developed a habit of doodling that I couldn’t shake from the start. I covered almost everything in sight with doodles, including brown paper textbook covers, folders, notebooks and desks – I used pencils on the Formica to make them wash out. I thought my behavior was harmless and decided to do my own business because I did my own business or had media that could be washed, and I stopped doing homework. I remember my 3rd grade teacher disagreed with that view at first and would try to curb my behavior by confiscating my equipment whenever he saw me walking away. I don’t think it happened for a long time. My mom grumbled to herself about it and got me extra pens and pencils so I always had something else. I was mostly an obedient child but this was one area where I refused to comply. It wasn’t too long before I was alone as long as I cleaned my desk periodically. It seemed fair to me and everything has been peaceful since then.
A popular item I remember from the 1970s was the DoodleArt series. This is basically an advanced color poster for children, teenagers, and adults. Black and white designs have been doodled for you and consumers are meant to color them with colored markers. As I remember these items were searched by myself and my friends in the 70s. While shopping in the toy store and craft store I would drool too. If I get one for Christmas or a birthday, it’s exciting. Here is a link to a DoodleArt kit for sale on Etsy, and I also found a DoodleArt revival that seems to be trying on Facebook.

The popular Zentangle is a meditative pen and ink style in which artists fill in parts of a design with a repeating pattern, usually in pen or ink. Some people add color to their Zentangle designs. The resulting Zentangle reminds me of DoodleArt in a way, although Zentangle practitioners draw their own designs instead of buying pre-made coloring pages.

Many of my art journal pages are Zentangle-like, as I often fill in sections with repeating patterns, sometimes drawn by hand, sometimes pasted from drawings. Whenever I put some of my new art journal pages on Pinterest, in the area where you are shown icons similar to your own, a lot of Zentangle art appears in my feed. I decided just for fun to try real Zentangle just to learn a variation on what I like to do. It really sucks that I still have it!
