Design Drawing Flower – Another year of Inktober has come and gone… I’ve always wanted to get involved, but there’s something about being a mom and running a business that’s a little difficult (especially if you’re taking the plunge like me).
I decided to jump on another artist’s hashtag #flowertober. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to continue working with what I love (flowers) while also supporting the small-than-big challenge that is the Inktober Challenge. As you can guess, I had a great time and managed to draw a few extra flower pictures, but I definitely didn’t complete the challenge! I even wrote about pictures of plants/flowers, and I know this month isn’t over yet and I probably won’t have another picture to contribute! But alas, that’s the way of life sometimes, and a sick baby needs to be held and this mommy needs to sleep too!

Actually, these flower pictures were probably out of order when I finished them, but that’s okay! Anyway we can enjoy 😉

I’m really into the cosmos these days. I’ve always been a peony girl, but I want to focus on flowers with petals and less volume. Cosmos came to my studio again this year, with soft petals and stole my heart! So of course I have to include some here, but I try to keep to that starting point rather than stop there!
I love the movement of this freesia (right). Of course, this is not my favorite flower to draw, as it is quite structured and I tend to like things more whimsical and idiomatic, but I love the graceful curves of this particular specimen. Finally, one of my Instagram friends asked for a freesia and I was so excited.
I love this sketch of the purple twins on the left. Seeing them dance together makes me so happy. It also helps add meaning to me because it was made for my favorite set of twins!
And I think the daylily on the right is probably my favorite flower in the whole series. Instead of strictly following the “model” of the flowers, I started playing with more movement and elegant layouts and I love it! Much of my design work is inspired by Art Nouveau. I love the balance of structure and movement, the emphasis on nature, and the asymmetric design. I have a feeling you’ll be seeing more of this flower painting style in the future! I want to quickly draw a picture like this. Can you imagine?!

It’s hard to say “no” to a giant poppy (left)! In this image I left some of the original pencil mapping visible before I started outlining the flower image itself. This is what I always do to get a feel for the paper, the shape and the overall space, and feel confident to start. I am
To do this? In fact, you don’t, and you aren’t “allowed” to do that in college classes either. But here’s a quick step that can save you a lot of time and stress. And I think there is something very true to be said about being able to jump into a project with confidence! Especially things like flower painting.
And last in this collection is Lily of the Valley. This is probably my favorite flower picture of the entire challenge. I personally love Lily of the Valley, but there’s something about it that’s hard to capture! Maybe it’s a perfectly formed flower, or their lilting little song that feels so natural yet so difficult to capture in one moment. Either way, I definitely need to practice drawing before the next flower drawing challenge I participate in!
Are you participating in Inktober? I’d love to hear what you think about it, and if you like the drawing/painting challenge!
